38 Non-Organic Ingredients Proposed to Weaken Organic Label

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is proposing to add 38 additional ingredients to the current list of substances permitted for use in organic food products.

These ingredients include non-organic colors, starches and oils, which could be used when an organic counterpart is not available. The proposed changes to the list are based on petitions made by industry.

According to the USDA, these substances are already in use in organic food production as a result of misinterpretations of current National List regulations. Organic producers may have thought that any non-organic agricultural substance could be used if an organic form was unavailable.

However, effective June 9, a rule will come into effect clarifying that only ingredients appearing in the National List are permitted.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

With the organic industry growing more than 20 percent per year, it's just natural that large manufacturers would want to capitalize on that growth as cheaply as possible.

Take the case of Wal-Mart, which recently tried to pass off non-organic goods as higher cost and higher quality organic products, but were caught by consumer fraud investigators in Wisconsin.

So it comes as no surprise that, at the behest of beer-making giant Anheuser-Busch, and meat and food processors, the USDA is proposing to sneak non-organic additives onto the list of foods allowed to qualify as "USDA Organic."

These ingredients would include:

  • Casings of processed cows and pigs to be allowed in "organic" meats
  • Hops grown with synthetic pesticides and fertilizers for "organic" beer
  • Fish oil unpurified of heavy metals, dioxin and PCBs to be added to "organic" baked goods, cereals, cheese and soups to elevate the omega-3 fatty acid content of foods

This move represents just another serious threat to the organic standards. It's also a slap in the face of consumers who pay more with the expectation that an organic label assures food of a higher quality. All the more reason to focus instead on finding cheaper local sources for real organic foods grown near you.

So the take-home message is that you need to understand that big business and the FDA are NOT on your side. They will do everything possible to maximize corporate profits with virtually no regard for food quality or your health.

Once you know and understand this, you can operate your life in reality rather than some delusional fantasy land that allows them to get away with this type of nonsense. Remember, it is your responsibility to Take Control of Your Health, not the government's or multi-national food or drug cartels'.

I am in favor in bringing the FDA , big pharmy, our government , codex, and all other agencies, including BIG corporate down.  Have these money hungry, lack of caring , sadistic humanoids ever think about their loved ones and what will happen to our worlds population?

Does the word SUFFERING, mean any thing to all of them.  Can they only see MONEY, and not healthy life?  The answer is NO!!!!!!

We will fight till the cows come home and longer.

My children and all children are NOT going to continue to suffer.  This WILL STOP!!!!

I agree that this move to change the organic classification is entirely wrong.  If anything the rules should be more stringent.  However, I don't think that "bringing down" BIG corporate and government agencies is a good idea.  We would not be able to communicate and share our thoughts via the internet if it wasen't for DARPA. DARPA (a government agency dealing with advanced technology for the defense industry) invented the internet (sorry AL).  Microsoft and other BIG corporate enterprises have developed and introduced the technology that we take for granted in our everyday life.

As previous posted, regarding so-called 'baby' carrots, carrots are not only one of the most pesticide laden vegetable crops, they are in no way, shape. or form, commercially 'organic' (pesticide, herbicide, artificial fertilizer free) or raw.

But then again, that never stopped USDA, aka, Uncle Sam's Deceitful Affirmations...

I live in New Zealand and we are in a position to do a silent protest on this one. Along with my husband, we have refused to buy any organic product from the USA because we do not trust them to be truly organic as we understand organic and the situation described here only serves to strenthen our resolve on this issue. We own a farm in NZ that is currently under organic certification. The organic standards here in NZ are very strict and are controlled by the organic certifying organisations such as Biogro and Demeter. Government departments have no say in what may or may not be called organic.

The late, great cowboy star, Will Rogers once said, "America has the best politicians that MONEY CAN BUY"!  It may have been a "joke" back then, but today, it amounts to GENOCIDE, in my opinion.  Petitions, no matter how large, cannot equal the influence of millions of dollars in kickbacks, bribes, and "favors".  In the 1920's, the FBI created the "Untouchables". . . A group of ultra-dedicated law enforcement agents who could not be "bought off"by the likes of Al Capone, the notorious Chicago "bootlegger".   Perhaps it's time for consumers and true "organic growers" to form their own national agency, staffed by persons with high moral and ethical values, who are "untouchable" by the insatiable greed of corrupt industry.  That agency could then monitor agricultural activity, and truly certify compliance by "registered" organic growers.  I personally would be willing to pay "a couple of bucks extra" every month, to know for certain that an "untouchable", NON-GOVERNMENTAL agency was seeing to it that my food doesn't contain the "seeds" of an eventual "bumper crop" of diseases to make the pharmaceutical industry "happy".  That industry looks upon "disease" as a super profitable "commodity", no different than real estate, gems, precious metals, or petroleum.  What say?
