85 Percent of Sunscreens Do Not Live Up to Their Marketing Claims

A new report suggests that most sunscreens do not offer as much protection as they claim.

The nonprofit Environmental Working Group says that 85 percent of sunscreens either inadequately protect from the sun's rays or contain ingredients that may be unsafe. They looked at the ingredients of 950 name-brand sunscreens, and based their analysis on nearly 400 published studies.

Only one of the 144 products sold by the top three sunscreen makers -- Coppertone, Neutrogena and Banana Boat -- passed muster with the EWG.

The Food and Drug Administration has not passed standards for testing and labeling sunscreens.

well, you shouldn't wear sunscreen anyways.  Wearing sunscreen every time you're outside is not only a great way to become vitamin D deficient but it's a great way to get skin cancer!

I agree. Sunshine is good for you. I don't exactly sunbathe, but it even feels good when the sun's shining on you when it's not too hot out.

I think sunscreen is only absolutely necessary for people with very sensitive skin (easily sunburned, easily blemished, a family history of skin cancer, or a rare condition) or when you're out in the blazing sun for hours on end.

A common theme I am hearing in the comments here is that sunscreens are expensive. I wonder if this is just another example of the suppliers getting on the band wagon, after all this is supposedly a necessary product that we all must use, therefore we all SHOULD be buying it, therefore are they hiking the prices up to make a handsome profit out of this supposed necessity?

I too like Burt's Bees too, and yea, it's expensive.  Unfortunately, I had a bad reaction last summer on the beach so I had to search for a new product.  I found a great sunscreen that lists natural ingredients, so I'm not consumed with worry about chemicals leaching into my system, I'll test it  this July 4th weekend to see if I get a reaction.   www.sundition.com/?click=18   The block comes in a pump spray.  I like it because nobody has to help me get the sun screen on my back.  I spray and go.  There are 2oz bottles available which I keep in the car and my purse, so I always have a little something handy.  If you check out the website, you will also see that they sell VU protected clothing too.  So you can go without any sunblock, just wear the right clothes.

Zinc Oxide.
It comes in tubes - NOT in the sunscreen section but near the ointments. It is a natural preventer of burn. And it's much cheaper than sunscreens (or titanium oxide so I would guess). I only use it on the beach, othewise nothing at all. We all here know the sun is good for you!
