A Warning About New Washing Machines and Nanotechnology

As you know, I'm a major fan of nanotechnology, except when it comes to exposing your body to these complex molecular machines, as seen in a recent study on brain-damaging sunscreens. While I welcome this radical breakthrough, I remain very concerned about nanotechnology being another form of pollution that could cause more harm than good.

If you've been eyeing a new washing machine lately (particularly from Samsung Electronics) be aware the EPA recently ruled models that use silver ions -- made of a bioaccumulating, persistent and toxic metal -- as a disinfectant must be registered as a pesticide.

Unfortunately, the EPA ruling may be quite a toothless one, due to the existence of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act that allows product manufacturers to sidestep any registration provisions, merely by deleting the claim that silver can kill bacteria.

By the way, other companies like The Sharper Image have taken the hint by removing germ-killing claims from such products as socks, food containers and slippers.

In the meantime, various industries have warned the widespread use of household products like this washer could increase silver concentrations at water treatment plants that could very well bioaccumulate in fish and kill some aquatic life.

I used to be in love with technology. I thought it could solve all of our problems. Then I saw the results: all my friends were getting sick, and the authorities were in denial. Then I thought technology is neutral--it can be used for good or bad. So try to push for good uses. Now I see no response to a lot of people's efforts to address abuses. Now I view technology like communism--nice on paper, but don't mix it with human inclinations! One of many things I thank Dr. Mercola for is teaching me how many of the products I used to think I needed are unnecessary. My life is simpler. I'm taking a big step backwards and I'm very happy with it.

I have no desire to use one of those fancy washing machines, my luck the seal on the door would fail and I'd have water all over the place.  I believe they have to use a special detergent too.

I agree that technology moves in a way that even our minds (at least mine) can't keep up with it.  Everytime you turn around something is faster or promising to save you tons of time.

What's the big rush people?  As an example, I don't have a problem if my computer takes 5 seconds to download something, I'm not going to run out and buy one that will do it in 2.  I don't need "speed pass" when I get my gas, I'm perfectly content walking into the gas station to pay.

No one just drives their car anymore, it's a rolling super computer/office/media room now.  No one sits at a light "just thinking" anymore either, they're busy doing things, you have to "beep" them along. You can almost feel the "rush and hurry" in the air wherever you go. Oh I could go on.

People hurry to get home to dinner and they have nothing to say because they all stayed "in touch" on their cell phones.  What is this world coming too, I ask you?

Share similar concerns with our increasing collective speed and paranoia about bacteria and using technology to achieve all our little miracles... received a very interesting insight from a close friend who suggested reading "The Spirit of Intimacy" by Sobonfu E. Somé. Am starting into it now. Anyhow the gist of her point was that Sobonfu's people welcome each new-born's spirit into this world. That's the whole village - not just the immediate family. Everyone verbally and in other ways assures the infant of their inherent value simply because they are there. The new-born is thanked for coming. And the community express their desire that the new-born be able to fulfill their reasons for coming to them. Because these people know that if a child is not welcomed in this way it leaves a huge hole in their spirit which they try to fill with all sorts of things - relationships, money, busy-ness and business... and because the hole can only be filled by communal acknowlegement and embracing of the person's spirit - and we westerners really don't live in true 'community' with each other (although some are making progress!) - our behaviour is becoming increasingly desparate. Am only into the book a few pages and will have to re-read several times, but this woman is making a LOT of sense. And I'm beginning to guess at why these kind of washing machines have come to be!!

Boy Suzanne,.... You nailed it rite on the mark here. ... If the people of the world need anything right now,.. it's certainly not 'more speed'. ... Balance is a result of a life that incorporates a harmonious blend of "doing" and "being". ... What we have now is a world that is a slave to "doing",.. at the expense of inner and outer health and harmony.

Technology has as it's goal,.. the profit motive,.. not the well being of humanity. There lies the problem.

The logic behind this kills me.  It is the same rationale for adding fluoride to the water supply to strengthen the enamel on our teeth.  What toxic effects does fluoride have on the remainder of the body?

Bacteria in the laundry are not a problem.  I would like to see the epidemiological numbers on the number of people harmed per year by bacteria infested laundry.  The marketing industry has made people so afraid of bacteria that they are willing to purchase anything that makes their world more sterile.

My rule:  if nature (bacteria) are trying to consume you, it is time to make some lifestyle changes.
