Almond ''Pasteurization'' May be Worse Than Previously Thought

You may recall an article I posted earlier this month regarding the concerns surrounding the relaxed labeling of irradiated foods, like almonds, by the FDA.

Earlier this month, I received a letter from Richard Waycott, the president and CEO of the Almond Board of California (ABC), to tell me that his organization will not use any heating or radiation to "pasteurize" their almonds. He explained that they will instead be using propylene oxide to "pasteurize" the almonds.

Mr. Waycott provides the following reassurance: "Pasteurized raw almonds do not differ in any significant way -- taste, quality or nutritional value -- from untreated almonds. Pasteurization simply reduces the presence of harmful bacteria on those almonds to safe levels while maintaining taste, quality and nutritional value."

I then called his office to see if there was anything he wanted to add to his letter, and he said that the EPA had tested propylene oxide and found it to be safe.

So now we can relax? Hardly.

Apparently, Mr. Waycott expects me to accept his propaganda without one single scientific reference to support his safety assertion. Even a simple search for propylene oxide in Wikipedia provides the following information:

"Propylene oxide is a highly toxic flammable chemical compound. It was once used as a racing fuel, but that usage is now prohibited under the U.S. National Hot Rod Association rules for safety reasons. It is also used in thermobaric weapons. It is an epoxide."

The Almond Board is not using a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) substance, safe for human ingestion, unless they are arguing it's flashed off in evaporation or heating, which also mean the almonds are NOT natural and raw. You can see the EPA site for more details.

The bottom line is that if any process kills bacteria, it has the potential to cause problems in humans or significantly change the quality of the food. No, Mr. Waycott, I don't buy your flimsy reassurances, but I do appreciate your warning of this previously unknown way that you can damage our food supply.

Additionally, propylene oxide a "PROBABLE CANCER CAUSING CHEMICAL" (per EPA empirical data), and "known human neuro sensor depressant" (per EPA) is NOT GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe).

Argumentation that all propylene oxide used on almonds is evaporated, or flashed off, the almond meat, is FALSE, even if applied on almond skins, or hull/shells.

Just as it is UNHEALTHY to use massive amounts of pesticides  regularly sprayed on almond orchards, to increase yields, & are ALL harmful to humans, these pesticides contribute to the dying off pollinator populations of honey bees, (particularly in combination with the HFCS feeding practices, post Spring and early Summer conditions for the hives).

These are not good things to be doing to any food.

The solution?  Only purchase organic certified locally grown (so you know the organic practices are real, from a farmer you can talk to, and know by eye contact, when you ask the question) RAW and Unpasteurized Almonds.

Whether NUKED, sprayed, or walked by a probable cancer causing agent, chemical(s), or pesticide(s), you do not want to consume such crops...

Such agricultural crops are NOT NATURAL and potentially very HARMFUL to anyone's optimum health.

Russ, I've noticed you keep saying to buy locally grown - I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful to you, but this is not a helpful suggestion. What makes you think every last human being lives near farms that grow all the foods they like to eat?  I live in a climate with a very short growing season, do you suggest I starve all through the nine or so months of the year when my state is frozen? I go to local farmers' markets all through the harvest season, and I'd freeze more foods while I could if I had room, but I just don't, so I buy organic when I can, and don't panic when I can't.

Here is my letter to the CA Almond Board...

To Whom it May Concern,
This is my second letter.  My question is with the new pasteurization you have planned, will raw almonds be available?  I'm not talking about about pasteurized raw almonds- that is a misnomer.  I'm talking about non-pasteurized almonds that are untreated, fresh, and raw?

For your information, if raw almonds are not available, I will be seeking my almonds elsewhere and so will many others, or I will choose not to purchase them.  I do not believe your hype that pasteurized is just as good as raw, blah, blah, blah...  It's not to me and I can think for myself thank you very much.  I suspect there are many others out there that also have a brain and are able to see through your blanket statements about nutrition.  If you would like to continue to supply healthy people with almonds I suggest you make raw unpasteurized almonds, non-chemically treated almonds, available to the conscientious consumer.
