Cola: Bad to the Bones

Recent research suggests that colas could be compromising your bone health.

Experts believe that drinking soda, especially cola, affects bone density in several ways. People who drink colas are less likely to get enough calcium and vitamin D in their diets, because the soda is replacing more nutritious beverages, and caffeine has been linked to a higher risk of osteoporosis.

A third possible explanation is the phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid can cause an imbalance in the body, which seeks to neutralize the acid with calcium. If there isn't enough calcium to use, the body will take calcium from the bones.

A study of more than 2,500 people found that cola consumption by women was associated with lower bone mineral density at three hip sites. There was less of a problem with decaffeinated cola, but the findings were similar for diet soft drinks.

Cola also interferes with the production of haemoglobin and can make you anaemic.

We used to see this Samurai in the medical laboratory where I used to work. Also my husband at one stage used to have a low normal haemoglobin (at the point where he was marginal for donating blood) until I persuaded him to give up the one small bottle of coke he was drinking each day then his haemoglobin recovered.

Anyhow you cut it or dice it, cola is very bad for you, and there must be a million reasons why...So all you gotta DO is to keep it away from you and yours, leave it on the shelves for the makers to ingest.....Don't even give it to a neighbour you don't like, or use it as a toilet cleaner, cause it will only add to an already overpolluted world we live in.....

It's studies like these (and many others) that explain why Coca Cola has just announced a partnership with the American Dietetic Assocation (http://www.beverageinstitute.org/includes/The%20Coca-Cola%20announcement%203-1-08~%20Final.pdf ).

Just like the pharma companies, Coke wants to sponsor research, while connected to the ADA.  Soon cola's and power drinks will once again be deemed good for you!
