Eating an Apple a Day Keeps Asthma Away From Your Baby

Along with getting a healthy amount of sunshine, expectant moms can reduce their unborn child's risk of asthma by eating more apples.

European researchers discovered the connection while tracking the diets of some 2,000 pregnant women and more than 1,250 of their children for five years. Of that group, more than 11 percent were diagnosed with asthma and nearly 13 percent suffered from wheezing over the past year.

Among all the foods listed by expecting moms during their pregnancies, scientists were surprised to learn women who ate more than four apples every week reduced their baby's chances of being diagnosed with asthma by 53 percent and a history of wheezing by 37 percent.

Scientists suspect the benefit of eating an apple a day link between apples and asthma may be the result of enriched phytochemicals, a fact I shared with you five years ago.

One caveat: Apples are among the most pesticide-laden foods you can eat, according to the Environmental Working Group's latest Shoppers' Guide. All the more reason to choose organically grown fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Additionally, it is important to know that it is likely that most of the benefit of eating apples is likely related to eating the skin, so definitely don't peel the apples. Also, it is not a wise to eat large amounts of apples, as they are loaded with sugar and can increase your insulin levels.

Yes, apples , for the most part, if not from a local organic farmer's market sources, are HEAVILY pesticide laden.

I personally have never met a big time/mass production apple grower (and I know many) who ever eats their own products, without peeling the apple (which tells you something about how BAD the pesticide penetration must be).

Therefore, ALWAYS heavily wash your apples, to get off any residual pesticides, or processing waxes/shellacs/glosses (that are used to make the apples look cosmetically better in the supermarkets and are NOT declared), if you seek to eat the skin, and it's health benefits, the good Doc talks about.

The take away message remains, avoid processed apples, and go for the fresh antique varietals (much more flavorful) that are not grown and processed with pesticides, or other aids to processing cosmetics, on them.

If the apple cosmetically looks too perfect, invariably it's NOT the one for you, your family, or your friends.

We eat only organic apples to avoid the pesticides sprayed on the non organic apples. Washing and peeling them may remove some of the pesticides but it does not remove the pesticide that is absorbed into the apple. The only way to be sure of avoiding it, is to not eat them at all.

You are not far off 'cheftodd'; I read about fake colored (rainbow lake color peels, through gmo) being messed with at Chiquita, on bananas (reported in the WSJ to try to hype their refinancing of the company and boost lagging/poor ROI stock price) awhile back...to increase sales, supposedly...

Yeah, that's the ticket, glow in the dark pink, chartreuse, blue, red, and purple bananas...

It will not be long before we are eating stuff from the garden that "tastes just like chicken"; if the GMO & INCARNATE EVIL types, at Monsanto and elsewhere, get their way.
