Four Steps to Organic Motherhood

Motherhood

More and more parents want to raise their children in an environment as free from toxins as possible.

In response, retailers are producing more products suitable for this goal. Sales of organic baby care products were up 34 percent in 2005, and preliminary numbers show an even greater increase in 2006.

Pregnancy and childbirth focus many parents' attention on health and environmental concerns. Numerous studies have shown that blood contaminants can pass from mother to fetus with alarming ease, and that the developing organs and tissues of children are more susceptible to damage from toxins.

Deirdre Dolan and Alexandra Zissu, authors of The Complete Organic Pregnancy, recommend the following common-sense first steps:

1. Don't renovate your home during pregnancy or early childhood to avoid exposure to sometimes-toxic dust

2. Switch to non-toxic cleaning products

3. Choose organic foods when possible

4. Use all-natural products

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Oftentimes, concerns over health and environmental issues don't hit home until you're faced with the responsibility for a brand new life -- your baby. Since toxins in a mother's bloodstream can easily transfer over to the fetus during pregnancy, many pregnant moms start questioning the safety of products used everyday.

You do live in a highly toxic world, surrounded and submerged in chemicals of all kinds, some worse than others.

The Daily Green Web site offers some tips to get you started on your quest to limit the potentially toxic dangers to your child, including a number of strategies I have previously recommended on this site, such as switching to non-toxic cleaning products and other all-natural products, and choosing certified locally grown, organic foods whenever possible.

If you want to go even further, which certainly couldn't hurt, you can take a look at Dolan and Zissu's new book The Complete Organic Pregnancy  to guide you along the way.

In addition to "Going Green," don't forget to take animal-based omega-3 fats -- especially during pregnancy. Omega-3 fats like DHA:

I followed all of these tips and what had the possibility of being a high risk pregnancy was a perfectly normal, healthy home waterbirth.

I ate only organic, wholefoods.
I didn't use any synthetic hygiene or beauty products.
I didn't pump my own gas.
I didn't clean with chemicals.
I took krill oil and prenatals along sidea  green superfood drink.
I exercised daily.
I got 8 hours of sleep every night.
and most importantly, I sought out a midwife to birth at home away from the dangerous hospital environment.

I also neglected to mention the beneficial outcome of my efforts. Despite my having newly diagnosed Celiac Disease I had a very healthy, calm and quick home waterbirth. My son only took 3 1/2 hours to be born from start to finish (he is my first child). He is in the 100th percentile for weight and height, is crawling and starting to stand at 71/2 mo, and is ahead or right on time for all of his other developmental milestones.

I also learned many of these concepts when I took the Bradley Method of natural childbirth. The class offered many terrific nutritional guidlines but never mentioned that lunch meats contain nitrates. Perhaps they thought everyone knows to avoid nitrates? So, if you are pregnant, research the processed foods, including meat. Anyway, good job Jennifer! I wish I had known about krill oil or even cod liver oil. I only had one friend with any good advice but she lived far away. All my other friends and co-workers gave horrendous advice about eating whatever you want, they mostly thought I was a nut and most tried to talk me out of my home waterbirth. Few Americans know how much safer home birth is statistically. I only considered it after all the new mothers I knew had traumatic birth experiences in the hospital where their wishes were ignored and they were treated with little compassion no matter which of several hospitals they entered. I believe this has a terrible impact on the emotional future of the mother and child.

I can't believe I forgot to mention www.mothering.com. The forums there are full of info . I particularly like the immunology and nutrition section in the vaccination page.

Way to go Jennifer! What a commitment!

As a mother of two myself returning to school to pursue my doctorate in Environmental Sociology, I have found a terrific source of non-toxic cleaning and personal use products I recommend to clients. They are safe for your home & family, highly effective & unique, environmentally responsible & more economical than grocery store brand products.

You can even order direct from the company online or by phone and get them shipped to your home (saves me time, gas & no spontaneous impulse buying!) Happy to share with anyone :) jjreed@kent.edu
