Google Offers Directory Assistance at no Charge

There's no stopping the Internet dynamo Google when it comes to providing cool free services to the public. Their latest innovation -- offering free directory assistance calls via Goog-411 -- could really shake up the telephone business in America, estimated at about $7 billion annually.

All you have to do is dial 800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411) from any phone, then tell the automated voice what city and state you're looking for, and the specific business name or category, and Goog-411 does the rest. Although the Goog-411 call is free, as is connecting you to the business, typical phone charges may apply based on your service provider.

You have to try this service. The voice recognition is really amazing and you can stop paying those annoying $1 plus charges from your phone carrier when you have to know a number that you don't have, and they will even dial the number for you for free.

By the way, this new Google service popped up about a year after Jingle Networks launched its free directory access service to cellular phones.

Don't you just love innovation and competition?

Competition is good.  Maybe the phone companies will lower their prices????

The problem with automatic machinery is that it puts people out of a  work.  Our unemployment is badly rising and more and more people are suffering.  It would be best if our world was not so automated and  we have a strong working class.  If this replacement continues, and  to many are out of work,  where will the consumers be coming from????

It is a chain reaction.  I for one am in favor of manual labor.

Yeah, as much as I can't stand the founders politics, they run a heck of a good company.  Very innovative and will force others to improve (microsoft, you listening?).

And annapavlova42, not sure what you're talking about with the unemployment rate.  Most recent reporting shows the unemployment rate going DOWN even more.  It's been going down since the recession of 00-01 and is at one of the lowest points ever.  Automation isn't completely bad either.  Increased productivity helps keep costs down and although may effect labor in the short run, you still need people to design/fix/service/etc. those automated machines.

Chrisk - besides unemployment being low, wages are up.  But any increase in the minimum wage will spike unemployment, obviously.  But at least those left working will make more money.  That should make the ones knocked out of the labor force feel better.

I'm sure industry will find other ways of getting manual labor in, like destructive bomb-making programs, more cars that are trying to be eco-friendly but aren't making the whole step, etc. Isn't war and industry development what made the country so big? Why some countries turn a blind eye to safety and fluoridate water in favour of industry? Why not find labour in cleaning up the world? There's so much pollution, so much contamination that we can't even drink our own water without dumping chemicals in it. If we need a revolution, it's to clean up the earth, not stop Google.
