Heartburn Drugs Can Break Your Hip

The list of reasons not to take proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for your heartburn is growing, especially if you want to protect your bone health. Baby boomers who stay the course on heartburn drugs for at least a year raise their risks of a broken hip significantly.

Based on a review of more than 145,000 seniors (their average age was 77) patients who used a heartburn drug -- Nexium, Prilosec or Prevacid among the most popular culprits -- elevated their risk of hip fractures by 44 percent, more than twice the risk of non-users. What's more, a patient's risk of fractures grow, the longer her or she takes a PPI.

If you think taking a H2 blocker -- Tagamet or Pepcid -- for your heartburn is any safer, forget it. Taking those drugs confers a smaller but similar risk to your bones.

You don't need a bone-killing drug, less sleep or even surgery to treat heartburn if you're willing to make these lifestyle changes:

  • Replace sugary sweet drinks with clean water.
  • Follow the eating plan spelled out in my Total Health Program.
  • Consume 1-2 cloves of garlic daily to eliminate H. pylori, a contributing factor for many patients with heartburn.
  • Take a high quality probiotic.

Is there a day that does not pass, in several months or years, where the FDA is not warning of some very bad, or fatal, side effect, from a previous approved OTC or prescription drug?  Literally!

How about BODY COUNT labeling per brand, for people harmed, or killed, to allow consumer's to make an informed  decision, on whether to risk using one of these products, or not?

Maybe Osama bin Laden is really running drug approval in America?

What is really disturbing is that most of the people in this country think the FDA is protecting them. The FDA is the front for the drug companies. Remember the common question that people “in the know” love to ask. . Is it FDA approved? . . . as if the FDA cares about the health of people. Prescription drugs are the number 4 (and contribute to or even cause the top 3) killer in this country. That is fact. When you really think about it, it is very evil . . . but we have the power! Stop putting synthetic drugs, either prescription or over the counter in your mouth and even if you do, spit them out. If we don't use the crap, it will go away. The market will take care of it. If we take the money away from them by not buying and using these drugs, the law suits will go away and people will live longer, healthier lives.

Want a good natural source for treating heartburn, as well as getting other health benefits? Try drinking a high quality Aloe Vera juice. Be careful though to not get ripped off. You want a product that uses quality Aloe plants that have high levels of mucopolysacccarides (stay away from concentrates that tell you to dilute the product with water or juices) and adds immune system building herbs to increase the saccaride amount. Herbs like Red Clover, Estragulus, Ginseng, etc. I have one that I use personally all the time and I never have heart burn. Used to though. H. pylori is the bad guy??

Much prior research -- before mass media got hold of this entire subject -- was pointing to it being but another of the numerous benign -- symbiotic -- bacteria we require for a healthy existence -- or -- a "pro-biotic"

It will cause symptoms if it's environment is disturbed!!

The "body count" (and/or "harmed significantly" count) is a  great idea. Way to go!

I recently had two tumors in my colon removed.  The gastro doctor also noted Barret's Esophagus which is precursor to Adrenocarcinoma or cancer of the esphogus.  Being a person that takes an active role in my health I went to work researching all of this.  But what disturbs me and although I believe my gastro doctor is one of the best - after surgery to remove the cancers prescribed me Nexium.  I already have degenerative bone density from years of having to take steriods for inflammation.  I quickly contacted the best nurtitionist I could find and started taking liquid probiotics and chowing down on organic, natural yogurt.  Coupled with 3 shots of a good dense aloe vera juice.

Furthermore, I found out that there is a procedure where a balloon is inserted in the esophgus to smooth out the pre-cancerous tissue of the esophogus.  If I remember correctly I found the infomration under Webmd under Barret's Esophogus - I live in Florida and there is only a couple of doctors who perform this procedure.  At this time I cannot even give you the name of the procedure. Additionally, there is a wonderful doctor in Boca Raton, Florida who will be doing lazer surgery to remove scar tissue, his name is Yartek Mansourian - also named in the 100 top docs in America and doubel board certified in pain management - no pills - just results.  Some doctors are finally seeing that  curing their patients is a good thing (and I believe only brings more patients).
