How the Pet Food Disaster Hurts Chickens

Many folks, including me, have wondered and worried about the ongoing disaster that has tainted many pet foods spreading to other food sources in America. Unfortunately, a frightening possibility became a toxic reality earlier this week with the announcement that some 2.5 million broiler chickens raised in Indiana had been fed pet foods contaminated with melamine.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Apparently, hundreds more poultry producers may have sold an undetermined amount of chickens that were fed melamine, not to mention a small number of pigs.

In an attempt to head off concerns over the lack of oversight displayed at the federal level, FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach appointed chief medical officer David Acheson, the agency's new assistant commissioner for "food protection."

Taking into account their dubious record when it comes to overseeing the poor excuse for drug safety in America, I can't imagine the actions of the FDA's new "food czar" will make much of a dent in the problem. Your best bet, as always, is to take matters into your own hands by choosing safer sources, meaning locally grown, organic foods.

I just get such a heavy heart when I read articles like this. It just seems next to impossible without unlimited resources to feed our families truly wholesome food. The prayer before each meal that the food would nourish our bodies becomes ever so meaningful to me. I guess I'm too easily discouraged, but there's so much deception out there. I don't even know if paying more for food will actually accomplish the purpose. Maybe I just give up and leave it all in God's hands. It shouldn't have to cost so much to feed my family good food.

Stay at Home Mom of 6 , my heart goes out to you.  My son and daughter-in-law are feeding five children, (four boys and a girl).  I introduced them to organic food and their interest grew after watching me recover from many years of ill health.  It is a bit difficult to find quality organic food but seeking it out is well worth the challenge.  My son shops at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Cosco, Target, and B.J's.  Regarding "Whole Foods", I have not found it to be as expensive as many on this site have implied.  They have sales and even though I have to travel 40 mins. to get there, it is well worth my effort.  Conventional groceries sell organic products for much higher prices than the above mentioned stores.  I feed my dog and cats organic food that I have prepared as well as organic bagged and canned food. Hope this helps.

Stay at Home Mom of 6 - I want to reply but don't know what to say.  One thing you don't need is all the confusion we are about.  I guess I would point you to Nourishing Traditions book and learn what basic affordable foods you can do with from that.  Let me know if you need a copy.  I would forsake processed foods, before I forsake conventional whole foods in favor of more expensive organic, to save money.  But that's just me, I'm used to eating either one, and I think the practicalities are important.  There is a website Mercola featured with the cleanest conventional foods, and the "dirtiest" ones.  I would also say that Grandma's way of cooking is going to nourish your family, because it did.  If I was at wit's end, didn't have time to learn everything, was confused by all the differing opinions, and dire warnings, and had a family to feed now, it would be a time for a call home.  "Mom - what did you eat as a kid? What did Grandma cook before the days of margarine? Or, what did you cook in the '60s or '50s?"  Our own traditions were right not too long ago.  If you fear food is tainted, eat lots of variety.  There's Farmer's Markets,  Settle for WalMart's or other large chain organics.  That's my opinion.  I guess I'll hit the submit key.  God bless your family.

p.s. I'll write more if I think of anything.

dear mom.....I know it's hard, and hard for me also as I live in Fairbanks, Alaska!!! Most of the good stuff (organics) I purchase on-line and have to fight with shipping issues.  Most times the shipping is more than the product and therefore cost prohibitive.  I can't even really get the grass-fed foods or raw milk. (not much grows here in that respect)  So if you live anywhere in the lower 48 you will get the good stuff much cheaper and I belive it is worth it.  God will bless your family if that is what you need.  Stay tough and strong in the Lord!
