How to Fuel Your Idea Machine

If you believe you don’t need ideas, think again. Not everyone is an artist, but everyone must be creative; it’s a necessity when you face life problems on a day-to-day basis. Solving problems is the application of creativity to reality.

Reading books, fiction and non-fiction, fuels your idea machine. You can’t create ideas without input. Life experiences and memories are your starter inputs, but non-fiction books allow you to branch out into the experiences of others, and fiction allows you to reach the realm of experiences nobody ever had.

Escaping into a book is a fantastic way to cope with a stressful life and lower your blood pressure for a while. It allows you to de-stress without actually turning your brain off. Your mind can be stimulated and rejuvenated at the same time.

And with books, your mind has to create the visuals and sounds all on its own. If you swap out just one of your regular television shows for regular fiction reading, then you can exercise your creativity on a more regular basis.

This article is a useful comment in a world that seems hell bent on non-fiction as total escapism to the point where a lot of younger people seem to be living a life of total escapism. I did myself in an earlier life. I am 58 now but remember watching endless videos in my earlier years, all fiction based action drama. I see through your article that if I had combined some fictional stuff I might have been better placed to face my mid-life crisis!! Isn't this balancing the two hemispheres of our brain? In all things it seems that balancing is the way to go.

After listening to the Chronicles of Narnia audio diskettes, I like imagining what happens between the books, or How I could continue the story.  I love imagining what could happen and what might have happened before whenever I watch a show, or listen to a CD.  That's why I want to make a company that has a rough outline drawn, then people read it, and add onto it.  After It goes through about ten people, it can be released.

But yes, C.S. Lewis saw the importance of sparking imagination and it's benefits on culture.  He even wrote books on how fiction books are just as important for the brain as an educational one.  But sadly, I don't know were to find it.

And whose to say you can't have an educational fiction book?  Those are like honey flavored algae.

A high point of mental achievement would be if you could find non-fiction, knowledge-dense books as enjoyable and any fiction book. This would allow you to increase your learning capability dramatically.

Although, I should say that it would be better to quickly read and finish fiction books than to slowly read only part of a non-fiction book, as knowledge dense as it may be.
