How to Make Delicious Flavored Yogurt

Why buy non-healthy versions when you can make your own? Here's a quick and easy way to create a fantastic strawberry-flavored, good-for-you yogurt.

One of the things that I hated giving up when I first started the Metabolic Typing diet was my flavored yogurt. I absolutely love yogurt, particularly strawberry.

I use my all-time favorite yogurt, Greek yogurt, Fage brand, though you can use any type of plain, preferably organic, yogurt you like.

Then what I used for the strawberry flavoring is this fantastic jam, the best I've ever found. It's the St. Dalfour brand, and it's sweetened with grape juice rather than sugar. It's got whole chunks of fruit in it. It's a simple product, with only fruit, pectin to set the jam, and grape juice. Not half bad for ya and fabulous!

All you do is:

  • Pop a couple dollops of yogurt in a serving dish.
  • Mix in one dollop of jam.

There you have it! So yummy! Enjoy!

I was out of town at a seminar and apologize for not having the time to more carefully screen this video. No question that you should be striving to use RAW milk yogurt which is available legally in California or you could make it yourself.  This is not one of Lucy's better videos, but we are committed to providing better ones in the future.

Dr Mercola says not to consume pasteurized yogurt.  Fage is pasteurized, as are all yogurts.

Dr Mercola's article on WHY he does not recommend pasteurized yogurt:

I really like yogurt, but I won't have it because of pasteurization.  (So let me know when organicpastures.com makes a raw milk yogurt.)

Why Lucy is using store bought yogurt is beyond me when just last week she did a nice video on how to make your own.

For those of you who missed it, here is how I make mine:

You can use either a packet of yogurt starter, or if I don't have any I buy some whole fat plain yogurt from my local farmer's market.  It doesn't much matter that it has been pasteurized prior to culturing as long as it hasn't been pasteurized AFTER the culturing.  My favorite brand to use as a starter for my own yogurt has 8 different live and active probiotics cultures in it.

1. Put 1 packet of starter, or 1/2 cup of good active yogurt in a very clean quart size glass jar.

2. Fill the jar with raw organic milk right from the frige.  (No need to heat it the way I do it)  It will be really rich and yummy if you use the top of the gallon that has all the cream in it, but you don't have to.

3. Wisk it all together with a wire wisk, to make sure you get some air worked into it.

4. Seal the jar tightly with a lid.

5. Now use a small ice chest, or one of those insulated igloo beverage coolers.  Fill the chest/igloo about half way full with water that is 110 degrees F.  The water level should be just high enough so  when you set your yogurt jar in it the warm bath it comes up to just below the lid.

6. Place the yogurt jar in the warm bath and close the lid on the chest/igloo.  Leave it alone for 12-24 hours.  The longer you let it set, the thicker your yogurt will be.

7.  Once it has set, extract some of the whey from the yogurt by straining it through a clean tea towel.  This will thicken the yogurt and you can use the whey in other recipes.

8. Put the yogurt and whey in clean jars and refrigerate.  Yogurt will keep 3 weeks in the refrigerator.  The whey will keep for 6 months refrigerated.

You can use raw colostrum (Qephor) or make your own Kefir instead and then mix in your own fruit (fresh or frozen).

I love yogurt too but won't have them for the same reason. Sometimes I mix frozen fruit with kefir and raw honey. It is a good dessert.

I have tried this yogurt and it tates very good, but it is pasteurized and that is why I will never try this receipe. It violates what Dr. Mercolas has been preaching for years, so I don't know why he would promote it on his web site.

There seems to be a double standard here.
