If You Hate Digital Rights Management as Much as I Do, Watch This Video
Cory Doctorow is the co-editor of one of the most-read blogs in the world, Boing Boing. He is my activist equivalent in the fight for liberalizing copyright laws.

If you hate digital rights management as much as I do, you will love this one-hour talk he gave at Google. Cory provides an articulate and eloquent discussion of the fraud and deception that the recording industry is seeking to place on the public.

This is what makes Vital Votes so appealing to me, I get to learn things, I'd never normally find out in the course of my daily routines, protocols or information intake.

If the gentleman is talking with Google, no doubt he is cutting edge and invariably correct.

I previously never had a problem with copyright laws.  I don't download music or movies, and I try to make sure that I pay for what I use.

It has always been my opinion that once I buy music, movies, or book I can do with it what I want as long as it is for my personal use.

DRM though has begun to really get on my nerves!  It doesn't seem to affect my books, but movies and music it has become a real pain. I don't want spyware on my computer tracking how and how much I use my media (Sony).  I don't want to have to have all the different cables run from my DVD/VCR combo to make sure I don't copy.  I have to keep getting up and changing plugs to switch between the two on some of my equipment.  This is the 21st Century for goodness sake!! We should be able to just have our cables plugged in and not have to unplug DVD players to watch television or a VHS tape.

In spite of our guilty until proven innocent history, DRM assumes guilt and punishes all.  Well, I may be in a minority, but I don't steal, I buy. And what I buy I want to be able to USE. DRM is making that harder and harder to do. Meanwhile the thieves still keep cracking it.  So, it is the honest who get punished.

DRM is like gun control.  It only keeps the honest honest, while driving them absolutely nuts with compliance issues.

Glad you agree. Would strongly encourage you to watch Cory's video.  He is more articulate and passionate about this topic than anyone I know.  It is a pure pleasure to listen to him discuss this in detail.

You might also notice that this is one of the few YouTube videos that Google now allows to be longer than ten minutes. When you buy the company you can change the rules.

Dr. Mercola,

Sorry, should have mentioned that I watched the video.  I was surprised by how long it was, and glad we didn't have do get an edited version. Luckily the kids were occupied so I could watch uninterrupted. I guess I didn't realize there was a time limit on You Tube normally.

I loved the bit about the trade agreement forcing Russia back to control of the press.  I never would have given that a second thought had I not watched the video.  So much of what we take for granted as a "freedom" really is very controlled.  Not much freedom left, except the freedom to go to bed when I choose.  I'm starting to look for an uninhabited island so we can start again.
