Inadequate Sleep Leads to Cellular Aging

Researchers have shown that the unfolded protein response (UPR), a reaction to stress induced by sleep deprivation, is impaired in the brains of old mice. This suggests that inadequate sleep in the elderly could exacerbate an already-impaired protective response to protein misfolding that happens in aging cells.

Researchers found that the UPR was activated in 10-week old sleep-deprived mice, so that misfolded proteins did not accumulate in the endoplasmic reticulum of brain cells in the cerebral cortex. However, in two-year-old sleep-deprived mice, the UPR failed to do its job and misfolded proteins clogged the endoplasmic reticulum.

Old mice that were not stressed by sleep deprivation were shown to already have an impaired UPR.

Adequate, good-quality sleep is among the factors for good health and happiness.
If you have trouble sleeping at night, try this exercise, which can also help you access inner guidance for the next best step to help with whatever concerns you:
Think of someone or something you love--a person, pet, spiritual master you trust and revere, a beautiful place in nature, or activity you enjoy.
With eyes open or closed, take a few deep breaths to relax. Then begin to sing HU (pronounced hue) in a long, drawn-out sound, HU-U-U-U-U. Take another breath, and sing HU again.
Continue for up to twenty minutes at any time during the day or night. Then go about your life as normal, trusting that you will notice answers just right for you.
HU is an ancient love song to God, which can be used by anyone of any religion (or no religion) to bring greater awareness of divine love, wisdom, and spiritual freedom.

And with melatonin already declining as we get older and being shown to have many health benefits such as anticarcinogenic, we need more sleep!

Something that is interesting re melatonin is that the US is the only country where you can buy it over the counter. The reason being that high doses can reduce your own production and cause a dependence. 0.3mg is often regarded as the safe level for extended periods.

Jasked I agree in that hormones don't necessarily decline as we get older but the reality is that we need more support as we get older to maintain optimal levels.

Something you might find interesting is Herbatonin - which is the only plant based melatonin which is more natural than the synthetic versions on the market.

There is strong evidence that suggests melatonin does not decline with age, as was once thought.

However, it's possible that it becomes less effective.

You can buy melatonin over the counter in BC, Canada. I use it regularly, and it's been amazing for me--instead of sleeping for 8 hours and feeling tired all day I can sleep for 7 and feel great all day. When taking melatonin I sleep much more deeply and wake up feeling very relaxed in the morning. It's not going to work wonders for everyone, but if someone has tried all the other recommended tricks to sleep better without any success then I'd suggest giving melatonin a shot.

This would suggest that shift work and on call work is probably not a good idea for older workers in particular.
