Interesting Thoughts About the Pursuit of Happiness

Changing your thinking or belief systems to manifest happiness is certainly an important part of the process of becoming truly happy.

However, as the author of the linked essay below deftly points out, that's akin to putting the cart before the horse. Instead, the essay posits, happiness has an opportunity to blossom when you get better control over your attention first.

However, even controlling your attention, according to the author, isn't enough. The other critical element in this pursuit of happiness is expanding your own awareness by making shifts in your perspective that allow you to better embrace acceptance, love, compassion and respect.

Taking control of your attention, but not shifting your perspective to encompass this range of acceptance, love and other things, will only limit your emotional experience of happiness. And it isn't easy, because, as the author describes it, consciously directing your mind can be a bit like chipping away at a thick sheet of ice surrounding your heart and mind.

Happiness May 15, 2007

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

I previously ran an article about the negative subjective impressions we attach to problems that have great power to make us sick, if we let them take hold. This interesting essay takes a different approach to happiness, from the aspect of taking better control of it.

However, recently I realized I will have to start delegating FAR more of my activities if I am ever going to achieve this mission. This will be a challenge as I am having so much fun now, but I know it is part of the plan.

Happiness is important for many reasons, beyond the obvious fact that most people would prefer to be happy rather than not. In addition, there is little doubt about the powerful effects positive emotions can have on your physical health and well-being. At the same time, there is equally little doubt about the effects that negative emotions can have on you.

Happiness will not only protect your body from stressors that can lead to coronary heart disease, but it can even boost your immune system's ability to fight off the common cold.

Last week I learned of another fascinating perspective on happiness. It is just far too nebulous a term. For most everyone, it is virtually impossible to define an activity that truly makes you happy. So I want to share with you a new definition that nearly everyone will easily grasp and apply.

Happiness can more accurately be identified by your brain as whatever gets you excited. It is what makes you JUMP out of bed in the morning with eager anticipation to start your day. Once you identify that activity, whatever it is, you can start having your mind focus on what it is so you can structure you life to do more of that.

For me it is easy. My mission is to catalyze the change of the entire fatally flawed health paradigm. That is why "working" 100+-hour weeks for many, many years has really never been a problem.

It is a proven medical fact that even smiling releases (involuntarily) beneficial endorphins from the brain to benefit your health.

As the Bobby McFarren song goes: "Don't Worry, Be Happy!"

Also, KILL, or turn off you television , if you own one; it's full of negative and irrelevant programming/propaganda/commercials and news that can only harm your overall out look, towards optimum good health and happiness for you, your family, and your friends.

The paradigm has changed in terms of good for you information dissemination through portals like www.mercola.com and the evidence is weekly in terms of implosion and consolidation and mergers or buy-out of news and old or failed venues like print newspapers, and electronic media entities, once considered untouchable giants.

The larger they are, the HARDER they fall!

GREAT article, Dr. Mercola. I really believe in positive thinking. Why? Because you simply have to. Life is unfair; there are big questions we will probably never get "the answers to"; and hindsight is 20/20. The key to health, longevity and fulfillment is positivity. I want to pass on a few blog posts that I think you all will enjoy if you are interested in personal growth, emotional freedom, and fulfillment:
1. "Excess is Opressive". How our western materialistic values, if not critically considered, can enslave us, create shame and fear, and diminish true joy. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/shame/
2. "Discover your life purpose in about 20 minutes". An incredibly valuable article. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/01/how-to-discover-your-life-purpose-in-about-20-minutes/

Blessings to everyone! :)

Russ-

I have to put in  some defense of television.  Obviously it has not lived up to its potential, but there are exceptions.  DISH network runs  Free Speech TV and Worldlink that air important documentaries you won't see anywhere else.  More and more science is being taught visually, which is helpful to us visually oriented,  ie see Discovery.  And on occasion, the silly networks will do something important-such as Ann Curry's trip to Darfur- for which they should be commended...Don't give up on it-- afterall WE own the precious and limited commodity of the airwaves.   FreePress.org does a lot of good work in taking them back!
enjoy!

TO Russ:
I agree with Jane Akre. There is a lot of good programming on television. One just has to be selective in what one chooses to spend time watching. Ideally, a caring and intelligent person will use television programming to educate and enlighten himself/herself. One can find many good documentary and balanced news programs on public television stations.

That said, I agree with your implied statement that a good portion of what is on television is pure c**p.  Mostly, what I am talking about is the so-called "reality TV." I won't name the so-called biggest programs, but most of you fellow readers know what I am talking about. Also, I agree with you that the "big four or five" American broadcasters have mostly irrelevant, mindless, numbing programming (with maddening commercials full of lies and half-truths) that does nothing to educate or enlighten anyone.

TO DR. MERCOLA:
It is quite obvious to me that you long ago found meaning (happiness) in your own life. It shows throughout this entire web site!! And, please know that many, many thousands of your fellow world-citizens appreciate your 100+ hours work-week done on OUR behalf.
Thank you!

Happiness can be affected so easily by our input - as Russ points out.  But, I'm not quite ready to shoot my tv.  We have Sky Angel service - Christian satellite.  We could turn to Fox News if we wanted, or watch some really bad movies on Hallmark, but the other options are great - including Christian music channels, inspirational programs, etc.

Like everything in our lives, we need to view tv as a tool.  We wouldn't choose to use a hammer to kill the fly that just landed on our nose, and we need to be just as discerning about how we use our tv, stereo, etc.

Music is a big input in our lives, and my children have been trained to recognize positive input music and negative input music.  There are secular songs they like, Christian songs they don't.  It isn't about the genre, it is about the message and what emotions it is trying to elicit. We have our own term "music from the negative side" that covers the type of music that elicits reaction from negative situations and is very unhealthy.  "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is a family favorite!  My current favorite is the Newsboys "Wherever We Go"  What a great positive message.

Reality is what you make it!  Make it positive!
