Is it Possible to be Both Overweight and Malnourished?

The stereotypical picture of malnourishment -- a very thin, starving person -- is no longer accurate. It is possible, and quite common, for people to be both overweight and malnourished.

In fact, British experts estimated that, similar to here in the United States, anywhere from 2 million to 4 million overweight Britons are not receiving the nutrients they need from food, even though food is plentiful.

The culprit? Eating too much of the wrong foods (processed, refined, no-nutrition varieties) and not enough of the right ones (fruits, veggies and other real foods). Some experts even believe that people in Briton were eating better during the World War II food rationing system (when they had no choice but to eat eggs, meat, milk and other real food) than they are today.

So while people who are both overweight and malnourished are not at risk of starving, per say, they are at risk of obesity-related complications like diabetes and heart disease, along with symptoms of malnourishment, such as:

  • Skin problems and hair loss
  • A swollen thyroid or bleeding gums
  • Muscle wasting
  • A swollen abdomen
  • Anemia

It’s not possible to tell if you’re malnourished just by the way you look, and in fact you may not notice symptoms until you are very severely deficient in nutrients. A lot of people may be on the borderline of malnourishment and not even realize it.

If you are fortunate enough to have access to healthy foods, it’s up to you to choose to eat them. Once you begin, the increase in energy, stamina and well-being that you experience should be more than enough motivation to keep you going.

And if you need help figuring out which foods are healthy for you -- and that will push your body toward the health you deserve -- finding out your nutritional type is an excellent starting point.

A great many over-weight people are malnourished and one of the reasons may be that they are not digesting the food that they consume properly.  Their intestines may no longer function properly due to being damaged by chlorinated water, pesticide-residue in their food, toxic medications, anti-bacterial soaps, low stomach acid, over ingestion of acid-reducers., etc. High quality probiotics and digestive enzymes can help to restore digestive function and assist in permanent weight-loss when combined with eating foods that do no harm.

I would say the majority of "obese" people are malnourished, just because you consume more calories than your body can use does not mean that you are getting all the nutrients your body needs.   And then you will start craving foods because you are deficient in certain nutrients.

It's quality, not quantity, that nourishes.  If you're eating garbage, it doesn't matter how much you eat -- you'll never get enough nourishment.  The only negative about the above article is that it demonizes fat, and fat is not the enemy (at least the healthy fats aren't).  Fat doesn't make you fat; insulin producing foods do.

This makes complete sense if you understand the intestinal tract.  A very common cause of malnourishment today is food intolerances that destroy the gut.  A destroyed gut, or leaky gut cannot absorb nutrients AND lets toxins leak into the bloodstream.  The toxins end up in the liver and clog it up. If you fill up on sugar, lard, high fructose corn syrup, nutritional void grains and you pile up the pounds....once again...doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out...

Just recently I was at a hotel lobby watching the convention goers eat breakfast. Here's a rundown...at least 75% overweight and half of those obese. Here's what they ate:
  • sausage...at least 6 each
  • bacon...several strips
  • scrambled eggs...piled on
  • biscuits/butter
  • pancakes with fake syrup (HFCS)
  • diet coke/coke
I actually saw a mother give her 2 year old a pancake and sausage..pour on the syrup and give her a coke....WAKE UP and stop killing your kids!!!
