Marketing, Not Research, is Now the Core of the Drug Industry

In 1950, George Merck, president of the company founded by his father and bearing his name, said, "We try never to forget that medicine is for the people. It is not for the profits."

If that was ever true, it is certainly not true now. Drug companies are hugely profitable enterprises, and they spent more on political lobbying than any other industry between 1998 and 2004. The transformation is owed in large measure to blockbuster drugs, meaning any medication that generates more than $1 billion in sales annually.

It might have begun with the selling of Zantac, an anti-ulcer drug that came on the market in 1983. GlaxoSmithKline priced it more expensively than the competitor drug Tagamet, to imply that it was superior. In reality, Zantac was chemically almost identical to Tagamet and no more effective.

But more importantly, the revenues from Zantac were spent not on research and development as was then customary, but on a massive marketing campaign for the drug. GlaxoSmithKline linked the drug to the relief of a common but minor condition, heartburn, then made consumers and doctors worry that the condition was a sign of a more worrisome disease, which the company dubbed Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. Soon, millions of Americans were using the expensive drug Zantac instead of the over-the-counter remedies which easily relieve most heartburn.

GlaxoSmithKline's strategy, novel in the 1980’s, has become standard operating procedure in the pharmaceutical industry. Most money goes into marketing, and research falls by the wayside; most “new” drugs are slight alterations of older ones.

I'm so glad to see news items like this finally make it into some of the mainstream media.  Drugs like Zantac are so dangerous becuase we need the acid in our stomach to digest our foods.  I've seen people truely believe that they need Zantac for life.  Isn't that like having a caste put on a broken arm and then never taking it off??

So some drugs do serve an important purpose, but the next piece of press we need to see is how doctor's are not trained to help people get off a drug once they are ready (another example is anti-depressents).

Exactly HCSG!

Most people think that 'heartburn' is a problem with the amount of acid in their stomach. Well they're right! BUT they have got it BACK TO FRONT! It generally is NOT an excess of acid, it is a LACK of acid!!! And as we get older, the body produces less HCl - so the 'condition' seems worse. So Zantac and antacids actually make the digestion process far, far worse.

If they took some Betaine Hydrochloride (usually with other digestive enzymes), often the 'heartburn' disappears - which is a sure fire indication of a lack of acid in the stomach.

For anyone interested - do a bit of research on this!

Interesting that the historical big spending on marketing comes from those companies that (when you look at it from a logical perspective) are the most unhealthy and unappealing products such as tobacco, drugs, the cola companies, the fast food companies, (and even political advertising).

Make no mistake, these companies know that the correct psychology used in the marketing of their products, can brainwash the people into believing that they need that product.

If they relied on the merits of their product, very few would be around today!

You are correct ZPE. Why else would they be selling pharmaceutical drugs on TV and in magazines?  They are going over the doctors, directly to the people who have the least knowledge about the drugs and disease. Although I truly believe knowledge is so important for everyone and that not enough information is disseminated, I don't believe that the average person should be up on all of the latest drugs on the market...if they are in need of medication then they should be made aware of their options...

The last sentence in the article is the best. "Better yet, we ought to be looking for ways to improve our health without a prescription."  That is the best way to go.
