More Insanity -- Heartburn Drugs for Kids

A recent report indicates that long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), used to stop stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus, may be safe and effective in children. PPIs include drugs such as Prilosec (omeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole).

The study examined 166 pediatric patients with reflux disease who used PPIs for up to 11 years. Most patients used omeprazole, but a few used lansoprazole. Doses ranged from 4 mg to 90 mg each day.

PPIs can cause increased rate of some infections, B12 deficiency, and iron and calcium malabsorption.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Drugs designed to treat ulcer conditions are nearly the "perfect" drug for the drug companies. They are highly effective at treating symptoms but do absolutely nothing to treat the cause of the problem.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid and the older H2 blockers like Tagamet, Zantec and Pepcid only drain your pocketbook at the expense of your health.

The PPIs are even better than the H2 blockers because they actually get you "addicted" to them. If you go off of the PPIs after being on them for awhile your symptoms will actually be WORSE than before you started them. That is one of the reasons why I never have patients go "cold turkey" off the PPIs, but gradually wean them off with the H2 blockers, which do not cause as much of this acid rebound effect.

Surgery for ulcers is another option you will want to avoid. Going under the knife is not an effective way to treat your heartburn.

Please understand that none of these drugs do absolutely anything to treat the cause of the problem -- and they can be dangerous. Heartburn medications such as Prilosec and Nexium can impair your digestion by significantly reducing the amount of acid in your stomach -- this impairs your ability to properly digest food.

Reduction of acid in the stomach also diminishes your primary defense mechanism for food-borne infections, thereby increasing your risk of food poisoning.

Additionally, if you fail to digest and absorb your food properly, you will not only increase your risk of stomach atrophy but also nearly every other chronic degenerative disease. There's also a phenomenon associated with these drugs called acid rebound. Because they slam the brakes on the acid-producing pumps in your stomach, when you stop taking them that built-up acid can be unleashed.

Remember, ulcer problems are one of the EASIEST health challenges to treat without drugs. Your best solution for your child's health as well as your own is to stay as far away from these unnecessary drugs and procedures by treating the main problem.

It seems as though my childhood si-fi- movies may really be coming to life.  No joke folks, are we being invaded by the outer limits and other worlds?  Mabe we are, or, our are government and sciencetist working together to eliminate the worlds population so they can really own the whole rock?

Will there be a new generation, or do these people think they are going to live till they are 1000 years old?

I am for bringing all of these sadistic people down.

We have to continue to fight for our lives and our childrens lifes, before 2020.

and I thought I was the only one thinking that very thing! If you add up all the bad health advice, medications, vaccinations, fluoride dumping, air pollution, chemtrails and food contaminations, it sure looks like somebody is trying mighty hard to eliminate the whole population. At the rate they are weakening our immune systems it would only take something like a flu epidemic to wipe us totally out. What isn't outright killing us is making us too weak to fight off anything.

The FDA, CDC, dept of Agriculture, and congress are a joke. They don't even inspect the food factories anymore.

I don't think they're trying to kill us off outright, per se, but I do expect that most  humans will be functionally sterile within a few more generations.  So, in many ways, most of today's health issues are self-resolving, including the parasitic drug companies, the allopathic medicine model, and those who unthinkingly support them.  They'll all die off, leaving no or weakened progeny.  Anyone with enough sense to educate themselves against this onslaught will remain to procreate.

Actually, annapavlova, a major decrease in population would be the best thing since creation itself, but I would never advocate eliminating people that are here.  The best thing would be for everybody to handle personal reproduction in a responsible manner & make the "sacrifices" necessary to live on this planet without crowding out or destroying everything else on earth.  Personally, not having kids or limiting it to just 1 would not be a sacrifice because I never wanted any & will never have any.  They just grow old, suffer through the heartaches of life, and then die anyway.  I'd rather have a forest than a kid any day!  This does not mean I won't fight to the end any government or group that wants to reduce the population in order to control it.  We do need to join forces ASAP - I hope you are right that we still have until 2020.  If the honeybees keep disappearing at the current rate, we might ALL be gone...& closer to 2010 than 2020.  It's hard to believe that after millions of years we are this close to the end of it all...

I urged my husband to trade in his weekly oversized bottle of TUMS, for 1 or 2 Tbs of Organic, unpasteurized, unfiltered apple cider vinegar whenever he suffered a bout of heartburn. Guess what? He hasn't bought TUMS for over a year, and very rarely even needs the vinegar anymore. Our stomachs need acid. Antacid type medications are designed to neutralize acid. Makes sense, doesn't it? Vinegar can be taken straight, mixed with water and even with a little raw honey for flavor.
If people would eat right, the acid reflux problem would most likely right itself.  Stop serving fried trans fats and other garbage to kids, and present them with healthy foods. That would sure bring the numbers of true GERD sufferers down to an insignificant number...but then, who would feed the greedy legalized drug lords????

Mary, I work with medically fragile, multi-handicapped children, all whom are tube fed. I understand what you are saying about PPI's being used to prevent aspiration pneumonia. Many of our children are on stomach meds for this very reason. One of our children has a difficult time keeping her formula down, no matter what. Ensure,Pediasure or similar milk based formulas are used routinely. What are your thoughts on rice based formulas used in tube feeds? This thought just came to me as I was reading your post.  I would probably be out of line to suggest this to a parent with no valid information, but it makes sense that the milk based formulas are harder on the systems of some.  I don't even know where you can purchase specialized formulas or what the cost involves, but it might just be worth looking into...Just a thought....
