One Fourth of American's Calories Come From Soda

An interesting study funded by the Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP), intended to identify opportunities for milk producers to develop more "value-added beverages," speaks volumes about how addicted people really are to sugary soft drinks, long considered the leading source of calories among Americans.

By the numbers:

  • Almost half of all Americans (upward from age 4) drink a sugary sweet drink -- a presweetened iced tea, fruit drink or carbonated beverage -- on a given day.
  • Americans drink nearly a quarter of their total caloric intake every day.
  • More than a third of all the added sugars Americans consume come from soft drinks.

A look at these numbers on their own demonstrate, without a doubt, why sugary substances like high fructose corn syrup have been targeted as a major culprit in the obesity epidemic. Then, combine those frightening numbers with the fact that consuming only one extra soft drink a day can add up to 15 pounds to your weight over the course of a year, and you have a recipe for a health care disaster of epic proportions.

One of the best ways to optimize your health and tame the obesity epidemic in your home today is certainly among the easiest: Stop consuming sweet drinks and make the switch to clean fresh water.

When I got on my healthy nutrition kick three years ago, I had more than a sweet tooth…I had 32 of them. I loved anything chocolate. Although I've never been a huge soft drink person, I did order a "Biggie" size coke or pepsi whenever I'd frequent a fast food place.

I started to drink only water or unsweetened tea or black coffee with my organic meals. I was amazed at how quickly I becamed totally weaned of the sweet cravings…about 2-4 weeks. Those things no longer look or smell tempting to me at all. There have been times that I'd try a candy bar to see if I'd been missing anything.

I realized what I'd been missing is not a sugar high, but a sugar "low." Within a half hour of eating a candy bar I would become very sleepy and lethargic. That downer would last about 2 hours. I guess I never noticed it before because I was previously always tired throughout the day before my health epiphany.

I hate the effects of sweet stuff now, and will never again  eat it. In fact, I no longer even care for good natural sweet stuff such as organic honey, syrup, or even stevia sweetened stuff. (I keep stevia around for guests who want sweet tea or coffee, and I refuse to keep any sugar or artificial sweeteners in my home). The natural flavors of fruit and vegetable are satisfying by themselves.

Once again folks, HFCS alone is not the only chemically refined 'fructose' to avoid at all costs...other phony and deceptive labeling includes: crystalline fructose (NOT from fruit, nor metabolized to blood glucose like levulose from fruit), agave (hydrolyzed HIGH FRUCTOSE inulin deceptive and criminally mislabeled), chicory (ditto), beet (ditto), inulin (ditto), modified corn starches, corn maltodextrins corn syrup, glucose syrup, organic corn syrup, and corn syrup solids.

All of these are coverted, irresepctive of claimed source, DIRECTLY to body fat, or blood triglycerides, and lead to cardio vascular disease, cardiac arrest, obesity, diabetes , hypoglycemia and cancer.

If you look it up, sugar is considered a drug on the same level as heroine and cocaine. It is just as addictive to the brain. Water is pretty much the only thing our body was designed to drink. Juice is just sugar water, fruit drinks are just a cup of sugar and so forth.

I absolutely agree with you Josh. The purpose of a drink (besides an alcoholic drink) is hydration. Pure water is the ideal and best source for hydrating the body. Soda, on the other hand, is not as hydrating because it is full of sugar and gas. Because of this, soda, including other sweetened drinks, is a waste of calories and should not even be considered a drink. But through successful marketing and brainwashing, soda is now on the menus of restaurants all over the world. But the objective of the corporations who are producing the soda is not to hydrate their consumers, but rather to get their consumers addicted to the soda in order to maximize profits at the expense of YOUR health. And that is exactly what has happened.

I stopped drinking soda and started drinking fresh water (Culligan) after reading warnings about it on your site. After a few months, I decided to have a soda just for a treat. It immediately filled me with gas, gave me hiccups, cramps, and my teeth started hurting.

Now it's even more clear why I stopped drinking that stuff. It's amazing what we can be accustomed to! Yuck!
