One Out of Five Cosmetics May be Contaminated With Cancer-Causing Impurity

As Valentine's Day just around the corner, loving thoughts are typically expressed with gifts, often encompassing scented perfumes, colognes or toiletries. Because loopholes in federal law allow cosmetic manufacturers to hide potentially dangerous chemicals, however, the Environmental Working Group built this timely Show Us Your Secrets Web page to remind you just how unsafe most of these products really are.

Here's the catch that permits cosmetic companies to hide the toxic load of their chemicals in plain sight: Even though federal laws require manufacturers to list all chemical ingredients contained in a given product, those very same regulations provide a loophole which allows them to omit the unique mixture of components that create its fragrance.

Protected under the umbrella of federal law, companies can hide any health-harming combination of chemicals to their cosmetics that may harm, among others, your unborn baby and you'd never know it, even after carefully reviewing product labels.

Just a reminder, a miniscule portion of cosmetics and toiletries have ever had all of their ingredients tested for safety, and the toothless FDA doesn't review the safety of fragrances either. And, one of those primary ingredients hidden in fragrances -- phthalates -- is among the more common poisons you're exposed to every day.

We could chat for days on this topic. In my opinion, this is one of the top causes of womens hormonal imbalances, besides plastics and the pill. A great book to buy is the Comsumers Guide to Cosmetics by Ruth Winter. You can look up any ingredient and its effects on the body. You would be amazed!

Some other alternatives I recommend to client are other high quality organic make up (you can find them usually in your local organic health food store, as well they can recommend other companies) and Young Living Essential Oils. These are great because they can be used as perfumes, as well as for other ailments or for just an uplifting experience.

Great book! I use it on occasion. The title is, however, The Consumers' Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients, if anyone wants to purchase it, it can be found on Amazon.com. The book is very useful for separating the safe from the unsafe in the product market. There are a couple of companies I prefer to use for my personal skin care needs; Anakiri and Jurlique. They both have sites on the internet. Both use absolutely safe ingredients. Love the essential oils. Do be careful what you put on your skin; it does absorb right into your body and can cause you quite a bit of harm.

Great point Josh. Another book I've found very informative is "The Truth About Cosmetics" by Haru Naito

He's developed a 100% preservative free skin care line that is awesome.

I have to second Josh's comments about Young Living Essential Oils.  I've been using them for about 10 years now, and they not only have wonderful fragrances for men and women -- some of the most exquisite fragrances anywhere, in my opinion -- but they have enabled me to climb out from over 30 years of severe disability and start my own business.

Thank God I found out about pthalates in nail polish, early in my daughter's pregnancy. She knows that I'm a healthnut and never questions my warnings about things of this nature. She immediately stopped using it. For a special  occasion, she bought some natural nail polish from a health food store. Because of this site, and others like it, she has proceeded through a healthy pregnancy: no msg, no aspartame, no processed foods, no cold cuts, almost no fish She is taking essential fatty acids, folic acids and healthy pregnancy vitamins. She stopped taking OTC migrain meds and surprisingly, the migrains tapered off. Most importantly, she is not vaccinating this child and has found a wonderful Pedeatrician who is backing her up. She is due within the next few weeks! Thanks, Dr. Mercola, for the wonderful information that you help us to find!
