Perfumes Find Their Way Into Human Breast Milk

Here's another reason to avoid potentially dangerous cosmetics, especially if you're a mom: Higher levels of synthetic polycyclic musk fragrances have been found in the breast milk of American mothers.

If you think synthetic musk fragrances are only found in products so labeled, guess again, as the list of common household items is HUGE, ranging from shampoos, shaving creams, fabric softeners, air fresheners and some unscented products. Chances are very good, in fact, synthetic musks can be found in any consumer product with a pleasant smell, says one New York toxicologist

Among the harmful musk chemicals babies detected in the samples of breast milk collected in Massachusetts: Xylene, ketone, HHCB, HHCB-lactone (the oxidation product of HHCB) and AHTN. HHCB topped the list of synthetic musks found in breast milk and they were found to be at levels five times higher than those reported a decade ago in Denmark and Germany.

The only "good news" here, albeit very slight: Babies ingested more persistent organic pollutants than musk products. Please be aware that synthetic musks are merely a single set of many harmful chemicals hiding out in your bathroom you must avoid to protect your health.

Many fragrances applied topically to the body, fall under US Cosmetic Law, with the FALSE premise that the constituent components are not internally absorbed.

Make ups, eye care products, lip products, are also under Cosmetic Law, full of these bad for you chemicals.

Based on this FALSE assumption of safety under US Cosmetic Law, many substances, chemical compounds, and non GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) excipients, or ingredients, in the many thousands, are REGULARLY used, that indeed are allergenic, even topically, if not HARMFUL or TOXIC to health.

Air fresheners, incense, cleaning fluids, soap, detergents, surface cleaners, so called antiseptic wipes, clothing softeners, and many other categories, are also loaded with BAD FOR YOU chemicals.

Another example of bad for you products are ORAL CARE products (toothpastes, tooth whiteners, breath mints, mouthwashes and rinses, breath tabs, chewing gums, breath sprays).

Yes, Cheftodd, beef byproducts, or rendered and altered fats, are the basis of MANY cosmetics (lipsticks, eye liners, soaps, skin/dermal rehydration, collagen, shampoos, conditioners, creams, jellies, etc.).

Glycerin, or glycerol, is also a byproduct from soap making, and is NOT in the vast majority of cases vegetable based, as FRAUDULENTLY represented on many natural health food labels.

I think it would really make a lot of people sick to know what there cosmetics are made out of, and it might get them to  stop using them.     ( A lot of make up is made out of beef byproducts.the trimings of fat, bones, and other stuff.)

People are so manipulated by the commercials, that they can't imagine going thru a day without layers of useless/dangerous, perfumed toxic-buildup rubbish.  They think unless their breath reeks of peppermint and they walk in a cloud of scent and worse - anti-perspirant, that they will be shunned by society.

They trust the products they use, or haven't given a thought.  Even vegetarians I know who are concerned about finding organic foods, haven't had the dawning yet about the common everyday products they use.

This is a huge topic.

Most toothpastes/mouth products actually interferr with the natural ability to remineralize the teeth.  Glycerine (the synthetic stuff) coats the teeth and takes at least 20 rinsings to remove.  I make my own tooth powder and there is no better mouth wash than certain combinations of essential or herbal oils and a little water.  I make my own toothpowder since years.

Eat right, live well, exercise at least lightly and the body will have its own healthy scent Most people don't know what that is (without 'offensive odour').    My own husband doesn't and never did wear those awful colognes/aftershave.  Men usually over do it and frankly, make me choke.

What is a fantastic body lotion?  Pure coconut extract - without sugar etc - the type used for cooking (aka coconut 'milk' or cream') straight from the can mixed with a little organic aloe vera get (without the parabens).  And in winter a little oil of choice added (almond, apricot etc, coconut oil).  Skin feels fantastic and is REALLY hydrated (aloe penetrates) and protected.

I try to reduce as much as possible the synthetics that go on my skin/hair.  But it is amazing when guests come (especially a cousin who now lives in the US) the small suitcase full of stuff she and her husband can't so without.  Wow.  A real eyeopener.

Russ - Yes, you have nailed it - cosmetic law is inadequate to protect us  Another aspect - many  cosmetics brag that they are not animal tested.  Therefore they are human tested.  If one buys a cosmetic lotion for their child, then it will be child-tested.  And for an infant - it will be infant-tested.  But it won't be animal-tested...And like cell phone usage, the deleterious effects will take years or decades to manifest, and by then no one will be able to tie it back to the cause.  At least with cell phones, we'll notice which side of the head the damage is on...  Duane
