Prescription Drug Sales Still on the Rise -- but There is a Silver Lining

Sales of prescription drugs rose 8.3 percent in 2006 to a total of nearly $275 billion. Experts predict the rising trend to continue at a steady compounded annual rate of between 6 percent and 9 percent through 2010.

It’s disappointing that drug sales are still so strong, but there is a silver lining. The increases are getting smaller, especially if you consider that prescription drug sales increased nearly 20 percent back in 2000.

Still, worldwide annual spending for prescription drugs topped $600 billion for the first time ever in 2005, and the United States accounted for close to half of those sales (more than $250 billion in 2005).

Overall, health care spending in the United States is expected to reach $3 trillion by 2011 -- and one of the primary drivers of these exorbitant costs is prescription drugs.

I remain confident, however, that the notion of replacing these potentially toxic and often unnecessary band-aids with safer and healthier treatments (not to mention less expensive ones) is starting to take hold. You and I have the power to break this vicious cycle simply by believing in the alternatives and sharing the message with others.

Silver lining? Decrease in the rate of increase?

Maybe it's decreasing because everyone is already on something not because less people are taking drugs?

Consider this:

People of all ages use prescription drugs. Use is particularly high among older Americans. The American Association of Retired Persons reports 76 percent of people 50 and older take at least one prescription drug regularly; 87 percent of Americans 65 and older take at least one prescription drug regularly. Among those who regularly use prescription medication, the average person takes four different drugs.

There are very few of us left that aren't taking something.

I believe that there is a natural cure out there for any ailment.  More often than not, it means a lifestyle change.  Don't be so quick to take the prescription handed you.  There is a lot of information out there and you obviously have a computer.  Those drugs are just killing you.

Ode to the Doctor

© CathyVM, 2005

“Your baldness is quite treatable

I’m giving you this pill”

He gave me a prescription

Then handed me the bill

More pills were added to my list

They seemed to do the job

And then I got a nasty rash

Which spread down to my kn*b

The hair grew thickly on my head

Alas my s*x life failed

I suffered from incontinence

And pains that made me pale

My guts went into spasms

My b*m leaked orange ooze

God help me if I f*rted

My wife was not enthused

“So sorry” said the doctor

Its side effects I think

Here try these medications

They’ll fix you in a blink

My new hair then began to fall

The w*lly drooped again

A lump grew in my testicle

My chest filled up with phlegm

My er*ctions were spectacular

My wife was very pleased

But they gave me throbbing headaches

And made it hard to breathe

The prostate shrivelled to a pea

Libido gone for good

My wife got very tearful

I’d hug her if I could

“So sorry” said the doctor

“It’s side effects again

This brand new drug is excellent

It’s called Voxabifen”

My belly like a bloated whale

Obesity set in

I hadn’t seen my feet for months

My snoring made a din

The headache stopped immediately

But chest pain took its place

My ankles swelled like footballs

And I lost my sense of taste

The wife left me on Friday

She’d found another chap

She said I looked like bloody hell

And life with me was cr*p

That’s easily fixed the doctor said

And handed me more pills

They’ll lower your cholesterol

But sadly not your bills

I had a stroke on Sunday

The doctor was appalled

But the thing that p*ssed me off the most

Was that I was still BALD!

I took the pills for many months

The chest pain did abate

But the nausea was terrible

And I put on lots of weight

My doctor tells me I suffer from Type II high cholesterol pressure.  Hopefully there's a pill for me coming on the market soon!  (;oD)

This goes to show how much control the Rx industry has over MD's, the government and society. The sad thing is, is that it is all them. We blame MD's, the government, society, etc. They all could or should do more research, but when it comes down to it, the Rx industry is buying everyone off.

MD's get this stuff pushed in their face in med school. Of course they should do their research on it, but they don't. The goverment is paid off and is show crappy research on how these drugs "should work." But are we rats? Society, well that just comes with beleiving in what you see or hear, really thinking MD's are god, as well as just being lazy.

By no means am I justifying for any of them. The thing is, when all these people start taking responsibility for themselves by eating better foods and leading a more holistic lifestyle, most of these meds will not be neeed. In the west, we live and eat like crap and wait until we get sick to go to the MD. In the east, they live and eat life, so their journey is full of prevention.
