Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

Food companies have doubled the amount of sugar they add to many of their products. Soups, cereals, and other foods have been heavily sweetened to attract more customers.

Breakfast cereals have seen some of the biggest increases, but even whole grain bread now routinely contains almost a teaspoon of sugar in every three slices.

In 1978, Kellogg's Special K contained about 10 grams of sugar for every 100 grams of cereal, but that amount has now increased to 17 grams, very close to the sugar level of vanilla ice cream. Over the same period, the sugar per 100 grams in tomato soup has increased from less than 3 grams to more than 6 grams.

Processed foods contain some of the highest sugar content, often with levels close to or higher than 20 grams of sugar per 100 grams of food.

Sugar consumption has been implicated in rising levels of tooth decay, diabetes, and obesity.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

You may not realize that we are in the midst of a diabetic epidemic; one in every three people in the United States either has diabetes or pre-diabetes.

This interesting report in the Sunday Times may explain, in part, why the incidence of diabetes and obesity have grown to epidemic proportions. Based on analysis that compared nutritional data reported in the UK's The Composition of Foods, processed food manufacturers have doubled the amount of sugar in their harmful products.

Clearly this is not the only issue as we also have a pandemic of exercise deficiency syndrome. Most people simply are not getting enough exercise and as such have decreased insulin receptor sensitivity. Please do review my latest thoughts on exercise from last week's newsletter.

You want to avoid or seriously limit sugar, though, as it causes your body to produce more insulin, which then blocks leptin, a hormone that normally tells the body when it is appropriate to stop eating. Processed foods are typically loaded with sugars and will fool your brain into believing that it is hungry; this, in turn, drives you to consume more calories and conserve energy.

The result is a worsening cycle of sugar consumption that floods your system with insulin and ravages your body.

Reversing the health-harming ratio of processed foods you typically eat -- 90 percent for most people -- is one of the key principles to achieving high levels of health while keeping diabetes and obesity away, not to mention cancer. Even in these time-challenged times of ours, you should strive to consume 90 percent of your foods raw, while keeping in mind your body's unique nutritional type.

Another effective way to avoid processed foods that litter grocery stores everywhere: Find local and safer organic sources for your whole foods.

In additional to cancer triggering refined sugars (cane or beet sucrose, corn dextrose, HFCS, crystalline fructose, falsely/illegally labeled refined sucrose as 'evaporated cane juice', etc.), that can also lead to hypoglycemia, Syndrome X, diabetes, cardio vascular disease, & obesity, even claims of vitamin & minerals fortification are a FRAUD (in terms of ANY bioavailability, or absorbability).

Among MANY real (non urban legend) breakfast cereal stories, I have personally heard, seen, or witnessed, is the one about three sources of CALCIUM for fortification in a breakfast cereal targeting bone needs for women.  There were three sources considered: ground rock or chalk (calcium carbonate), ground oyster shells, or actually absorbable dairy derived calcium.

Which one is still in that cereal brand?   Ground chalk at a 'window dressing' (trace amounts) levels.

When the corporate buyer was asked why they were not using the best one (dairy) at a real dosage level, he replied: "Cost".

When further pressed what would happen if the public found out?  He replied, "Maybe we'll switch".

False representations in children's Saturday morning, or weekday afternoon, TV programming, that these cereal brands "are part of a this complete breakfast" (showing an image of a bowl of their glorified puffed sugar & refined grains, next to real fruit, eggs, toast, a pitcher of milk, or real orange juice,) deceptively trying to fool the children into thinking any of these brands are wholesome, is EVIL.

This is but one example of why 'cereal is NOT for breakfast anymore' & why America has voted with their wallets & feet to healthier, or different, options.

Such options include Starbuck's for a caffeine hit, or a much healthier energy/meal replacement bar, like Dr. Mercola's Cocoa Cassava Bars, that are: 'Truly Delicious & Absolutely Nutritious(TM)!

In 1905 in America, we were typically an agrarian population, with a huge influx of European immigrants coming to our shores.

Primary diseases like polio, typhoid, and influenza, killed us younger, on an actuarial curve, but the population also consumed REAL and UNPROCESSED food or beverages.

The average consumption of refined sugars (cane sucrose, fruit derived, maple or honey) back then, was about 6 pounds per year per person.

Today, our life expectancy in America is LONGER (though children for the first time are being projected not to have longer life expectancies) & generally speaking, primary diseases do not  enter into the equation of mortality in our population, primarily consuming highly processed food & beverages.

HOWEVER, we have more diabetes, hypoglycemia, cardio vascular disease, cancer, & obesity, than at any time in our country's history, some 102 years later.

The USDA claims, according to it's behind the curve/sandbagged statistics, we on average in America are consuming EACH about 153 pounds per year per person of refined sweeteners (cane & beet sucrose, corn fructose, High Fructose Corn Syrup, corn dextrose, corn maltodextrins/starches, that are technically not counted as sugars, honey, maple, fruit juices, etc.)

This USDA number fails to take into account also polyol/alcohol distilled or high intensity sweeteners, which are technically non-caloric in assignment.

The BOTTOM LINE is the American pallet has been artificially sweetened through processed food & beverage, bulking with sweeteners, because after air, water & salt, it is the cheapest cost source ingredient, to make PROFIT in brands, irrespective of HARM or DEATH, triggered in those consuming such products.

We recommend reading: 'FAT LAND: How America Became The Most Obese Nation' by Greg Critser, for further overt dumbing-down explanation of the food chain.

Protac:

The "They" are ALREADY twisting, manipulating, and spinning the facts.

"They" are arguing we are living longer, and therefore all the more reason to consume dumb-downed, nutrient void, refined sugar laden, hydrogenated and trans fat laced, (etc.) synthetic products....it's called a Breakfast Cereal TV Commercial.

Without giving the empirical background on how we as a country got to this sorry state of affairs, in the name of fast bucks and profiteering off the health of the nation (knowingly), we open ourselves up to be discredited.

IN POINT OF FACT, as you already know, it is through vetted and FULL DISCLOSURE venues like Vital Votes, we change the knowledge base for all consumers, so each of "them" may make their own  informed decisions, to improve and take care of their own health.

"And the TRUTH shall set us (each) free",

Chef Todd:

How long before Homeland Security puts frozen raw, or burnt, Omaha Steaks on the 'No Fly List'?

When burnt steaks are outlawed, only out laws will have burnt steaks?

Weapons of mass burnt destruction...?

Carbonate the enemy? Buy them a Liquid Smoke Gift Certificate?

Is Al Queda really behind the Ruth Chris Steak chain?

Burning at the stake, remains fatal to take?

;-)
