Protect Your Health and Life From Medical Mistakes

I warned you last week about how frequently medical errors occur, often because many doctors rely on preloaded cookie-cutter recipes for many health conditions and don't deviate from them. USA Today recently profiled a young Chicago woman who has experienced many of those very same and preventable medical mistakes first-hand.

Due to a rare, congenital heart condition, this patient makes a trip to the hospital, unfortunately, at least once a month. Based on those error-filled visits -- often involving improper testing or care or being given the wrong medication -- she wears a medical alert bracelet and takes a "resume" (describing her medical history and allergies) with her.

After repeated warnings to health care workers during a recent hospital visit about her allergic reaction to morphine, no surprise, the young patient received morphine anyway and probably saved her own life by questioning the nurse delivering it.

True, this is a rare case of a ridiculous number of medical errors experienced by one human being with a rare heart condition. That said, the odds of you or a loved one suffering from the mistakes of others in a hospital setting -- at least 34 percent according to a Harvard School of Public Health study -- are, unfortunately, better than good.

No wonder, human error is behind the spike in prescription-related deaths sold at a pharmacy near you at the beginning of each month and mortality rates fall when doctors go on strike.

That's why I urge you to begin taking better ownership of your health and avoiding the drug-addicted paradigm that passes for conventional medicine.

As a Clinical / TCM herbalist, about 75% of my work with patients involves trying to “undo” doctor’s mistakes (mostly due to pharmaceuticals they have prescribed) Applying the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine helps, but It is one of the most frustrating problems! However the biggest question I have about common “mistakes” is, “are they always mistakes or sometimes just a grab for money”?

It is a hard thing to even imagine but I believe I have seen many patients that were convinced by there doctors that they had cancer and maybe even had lab work showing a false-positive for cancer (I wonder how that works!) and because they had lots of money they were scared into chemo, and the “whole nine yards”

Although I have seen some (who refuse chemo therapy) truly beat cancer with herbs, some just “heal up” way too fast! In these, I am sure it was not cancer at all! (and I am the first to tell them!)

Is it possible that it is not always mistakes? Are some doctors so evil they just don’t care about anything but that “Ca-ching” sound of cash?

I, for one, have protected doctors from this accusation for a long time and now I am beginning to have my doubts! What can we do if it is true?

When it comes to chemo and radiation for cancer treatment, I fully believe that it is a "ca-ching" all the way.  I don't however think that all of the docs out there are just so evil that they do things just because they can.  I believe that they are part of a flawed system that we need to change.  Each person that we educate on proper diet, exercise and nutrition is one more person that is armed with the ability to be in charge of their own health and the health of their family.  This is how we work to fix a system gone bad.

Beginning last Spring, my father had numerous MRI's done with contrast.  By the time the FDA issued their alert to NOT use contrast in patients with kidney failure, the damage had already been done.  In early January, we begged the doc to test him for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, he snorted and said that he had never heard of such a condition, and that the contrast medium was totally harmless.  My father has been a total invalid since Nov 5, 2006, and come close to dying more than a few times in that interval.  We still have not been able to get a doctor to do the biopsy to diagnose this condition or rule it out.  Totally disgusting.  We personally handed copies of the alert to no less than 4 physicians, 3 nurse practitioners, and myriad floor nurses, with no one willing to help.

Excellent article.  Thank you for posting it.  It is refreshing to find doctors willing to speak up against the medical "industry" whose bottom line is profit rather than patients' welfare and health.

It is doctors like you that will positively impact the future of our health care.  I know how hard it is to speak up and risk retaliation.  KUDOS!

Having a severely handicapped child who has had more than his fair share of hospitalizations, though not 1 a month.  There are many times I refused to let the staff give him medications that the doctor ordered.  The thing I had the most trouble with is his diet.  he is highly allergic to cow's milk, all forms, but does well on raw goat's milk.  Evertime he is in the hospital we always get something with milk in it  and almost every day.
