Rethink Winning the Lottery, As It Can Actually Ruin Your Life

In his darkest moments, Jack Whittaker has sometimes wondered if winning the nearly $315 million Powerball game was really worth it.

The jackpot that was the stuff of dreams turned into a nightmare: His wife left him and his drug-addicted granddaughter -- his protege and heir -- died. He endured constant requests for money.

Almost five years later, Whittaker is left with things money can't cure: His daughter's cancer, a long list of indiscretions documented in newspapers and court records, and an inability to trust others.

Although we always hear about the people who make a mess of things after winning, there must be people who succeed and do right with the money, although in a quick search I didn't find anything but negative stories.  Good things aren't news anymore anyway.

I know first hand.  One of my clients won the lottery in the mid-90s.  She continued her same lifestyle, working for a government agency, for about 10 years after winning.  She did this largely because she had multiple medical problems including fibromyalgia and even with winning the lottery she needed the insurance.  When she did retire, they bought a big property in Montana & built a beautiful home.

I think, largely, it depends upon the kind of person you are before winning that makes the difference.  My client still had the same medical issues as before.  The same problems with family.  Who she was as a person did not change.  And after winning she continued to manage them the same.

This gentleman, even tho he has been generous, was involved in behaviors that were then targeted.  Before winning he probably believed in some justification for his behaviors.  Once he hit the spotlight however, his "secret sins" came to light & the justifications he probably used in his own mind didn't work in public.  It sounds like winning the lottery only magnified the problems that were already there.

vociferum (Dan) - I hope you win. We need more people like you in this world. People who care about the environment.

I also dream about a ranch if I win. I also would donate a lot to  honest charities that I have in mind.

"Rethink Winning the Lottery"

Okay...I'll think about it.

Thought about it, I'm still going to play, and hopefully win.  I'll take the chance.

In fact, if anyone has a spare million dollars, I'll personally show you how I won't screw it up!

I believe that money only amplifies a current condition.
There is a program on T.V. called The curse of the lottery.
It highlights people who's lives became a mess not because of the money, but they made some crazy choices with the presence of the money; drugs, driving recklessly in nice cars, ignoring their children....
