What is Safer -- Fighting Fires or Taking Aspirin?

Taking an aspirin every day is nearly as risky as working as a firefighter.

For 50-year-old men, taking a daily aspirin (which many do to help prevent heart disease and strokes) increases the risk of death by the equivalent of 10.4 deaths per 100,000 men per year.

This is similar to the added risk that professional firefighters face. Firefighters have an added risk of 10.6 deaths per 100,000 people per year, compared to 3.9 for all occupations and 0.4 for office workers.

In comparison, drugs that have been withdrawn from the market, such as the painkiller Vioxx and the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri, increased the risk of death by 76 deaths per 100,000 people per year and 65 deaths per 100,000 people per year, respectively. Tysabri may be reintroduced to the market if the FDA deems it worth using despite the risks.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

If you still believe in the dubious safety of the drugs you take -- even ones you purchase over the counter -- you may surprised to learn just how risky taking a daily aspirin really is.

Of course, if you were so unfortunate as to have taken Vioxx or Tysabri when they were still on the market, your risk is far, far greater.

Aspirin has developed a reputation in conventional medical circles for being a useful approach for lowering the risk of heart disease -- just take one a day to prevent heart attack or stroke. But once you understand natural medical principles, it is easy to see that no drug is truly the solution for chronic degenerative disease.

If you read the studies by British and American researchers, you will learn that taking aspirin definitely does more harm than good. The potential side effects of aspirin include:

Don't believe a physician that instructs you to take an aspirin to reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke. That nonsense was proven false nearly a decade ago. If you don't believe me, research it for yourself. There are FAR more effective options to prevent heart disease and stroke than simply popping a pill.

Although drugs may seem to provide some initial benefit, the long-term overall effects are rarely appreciated. Drug treatments almost invariably result in a combination of side effects that far outweigh any benefit -- including, in the case of aspirin and many other drugs, an increased risk of death.

Unfortunately, the take-home message here -- that federal regulators must do a better job of assessing the true risks and rewards of taking drugs -- will continue to be a pipe dream as long as drug companies, with cooperation from the FDA, have anything to say about it.

The real answer is to Take Control of Your Health. You can review the over 100,000 pages of information on our Web site; this is an important first step toward improving your health safely, naturally and without drugs.

I know I'm gonna get bashed for this, but when relaxation, massage, heat, cold, etc don't work, I take aspirin for headaches, because it WORKS. I rarely have headaches anymore, and even more rarely have one I can't get rid of with massage (I massage my own shoulders, neck, and head) and other measures, so I don't take aspirin very often. I really don't believe that the occasional use of aspirin is detrimental. Aspirin, is after all, a naturally occurring substance, and used in moderation and with great care, is a useful remedy for occasional use.

Before my hysterectomy (and yes, it was medically necessary and saved my life, so please don't make any negative comments, I'm not going to reveal my entire medical history here), I had migraines so severe I was debilitated  an entire day every single month of my life for close to three decades (at least it was only one day - two of my daughters get hormone-induced migraines that last several days.) The only time I was actually healthy and free from suffering was when I was pregnant (ironic, isn't it, that a condition that makes other women sick made me healthy?)  The only relief from those headaches was a combination of aspirin, tylenol, and caffeine (and full, extra-strength doses at that, every four hours, around the clock). Would I have done something else if I could have?  Of course, but at the time, I lacked the knowledge and resources. Thank God for the internet; the amount of information I've been able to research would have been impossible for me just a few short years ago, and I've been helping my daughters with research to find safe ways to treat (and hopefully prevent) their migraines.

mimi2seven,
Regarding your statement:
"Would I have done something else if I could have?  Of course, but at the time, I lacked the knowledge and resources. Thank God for the internet; the amount of information I've been able to research would have been impossible for me just a few short years ago..."

AMEN, SISTER!! I am now 60 and I took bucketfuls of ibuprofen for premenstrual and menstrual cramping for many years for about 4 to 5 days a month!! I didn't know what else to do--I had to go to work and have a life not spent in bed curled up in a ball. Yes, I suffered dysmenorrhea from day 1 of my first period at 13 all the way up to age 52 (in the early days, I took aspirin for the pain). If only I had known how to eliminate this problem with a natural solution...

I've paid the price for sugar addiction, pharmaceuticals, bad diet choices--I wound up with a pancreas tumor at age 58, but I survived brutal surgery with postsurgical complications and am very thankful to be alive.

Life is different and much better now, since I vastly improved my diet about 10 months ago. The Mercola site was a huge help in finding truthful information. I found a source of raw dairy and grassfed meat through a local co-op that I found via a link on the Weston A Price foundation web site about 6 weeks ago. The raw milk is already making a big difference in my hypertension (such a simple solution).

My goal is to get off my hypertension and asthma drugs forever by the end of 2007. BTW, I DON'T miss the sugar at all now.

Right, PPRAGammaGirl.  I want people to be free to share their real
feelings and experiences so I can learn from them.

You also made a good point in a previous post somewhere about the
negative points people get for a different opinion.  I think you should
not be punished for just simply, respectfully stating a different opinion.

Save the negative points for really rude or crazy posts.

I have had killer migraines-sometimes you need an asprin!

Healthlinlks is right. We are in a epidemic of estrogen dominant symptoms. Migraines are almost always caused by excess estrogen. At that time of the month when estrogen is highest it causes the blood vessels in the brain to swell causing the migraine. Just like bloating at that time too. That is why drinking cold water and ice packs work as they help constrict the vessels. Progesterone is the hormone that balances and helps get rid of excess estrogen. Unfortunately what is happening is that we are taking in so much estrogen from our food sources, plastics, chemicals, etc that our bodies cannot keep up with the progesterone.
Natural progesterone creams are the way to go, but be warned there is a HUGE difference in quality and many are total scams that wont work. Check out the website of Dr, John Lee (the pioneer in progesterone cream, now passed away) www.johnleemd.com and you can read up all about natural hormones, where to find them and use them. Good luck!

Mimi,

I don't know your whole history so this is just one area for you to investigate....you say you had a hysterectomy so what it brings to mind for me is progesterone.  When you felt so good being pregnant, the body produces 300% more progesterone during pregnancy.  There is a huge connection to migraine and progesterone.  If you are taking hormone replacement that is less than natural you will not find releif.
Maybe just try a cream from the health food store and adjust dose until you feel good, less is often more.  It won't hurt you and may help.
No one should live with ill health.  Explore you will find the answer.
