The Health-Harming Confusion About Saturated Fats

Apparently, there's even some doubt among experts in naturopathic medicine about the huge difference between saturated fats and trans fats and how they contribute to type 2 diabetes, according to an interesting column by Dr. Mary Enig.

As Dr. Enig describes, health professionals often choose the wrong studies by which to justify their erroneous opinions like ones cited from the British Journal of Nutrition and Diabetologia, as both lump saturated fats together with trans fats.

A century ago, when our diets were rich in saturated fats, type 2 diabetes didn't exist. What's more, diabetes didn't become a major epidemic in America until people began moving toward diets heavy in processed, trans fats-laden fast foods that expanded their waistlines and destroyed their health.

No doubt, your body needs some saturated fats to stay healthy. The trick: Getting your saturated fats from healthier food sources that aren't highly processed or contaminated with trans fats, something you probably won't find at your neighborhood fast food restaurant.

For most of us, that means spending some serious time in the kitchen preparing healthier foods, but it can be done and on a budget too.

Great article by Dr Enig.  Just about everyone now agrees that trans fats are bad, but she was an early pioneer in pointing out this problem.  Trans fats combined with too much omega-6 polyunsaturated fat, and rancid and oxygenated unsaturated fats are bad news for modern diets.

I am almost finished reading Anthony Colpo's "The Great Cholesterol Con" in which he also presents plenty of evidence that saturated fats are good.  His book is easy to read, very comprehensive, and well worth the price.  It's on Amazon.com in paper form, with many good reviews, and available in e-book form on Anthony's web page:

Many thanks again to Dr Mercola for continuing to bring us good articles and information for our health!

I find the topic of Sat. fats very interesting. I use to lump all Sat. fats into one group until I heard the stance of Dr. Mercola, Dr. Price, etc... It makes a lot of sense to me that the bad part of Sat. fat is trans fats. I just can't understand why their hasn't been more interest/studies on this. Why not get to the bottom of this? The scary part is, I think I may already know why we don't have an answer.

I have always wondered why cholesterol is bad for you, since it naturally occurs in the human body. It seems strange that the less saturated fat society is eating the rate of heart attacks have increased.  Reading your web site has been very educational.

Just in case you don't know, Mary Enig is probably the formost expert on lipid/fat nutrition.  If she says something, it's most likely right.  Always research everything yourself, and don't trust any one person's word on something, but Dr. Enig is highly respectable and trustworthy.  I would recommend her book "Know Your Fats: The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils, and Cholesterol"  Highly informative and a must read for anybody interested in nutrition/diet.

Mike, I agree about your comments on Dr Enig.  Here's a link to an article she wrote with Sally Fallon on fats - "The Skinny on Fats".  It was very educational for me:

I also enjoyed their book "Eat Fat Loose Fat", which also had a lot of good diet info.
Check it out on Amazon.com for reviews.  Dr Mercola also has info and sells it:
