The Natural Way to Rid Yourself of a Migraine Headache

MigrainesIt is possible to stop headaches by stimulating your body's natural painkilling ability.

By putting pressure on a nerve just under your eyebrow, you can cause your pituitary gland to release painkilling endorphins immediately.

You can learn more about the details of the method by clicking at Squidoo Health & Medicine.

Another method for releasing endorphins is to take 10 teaspoons of cayenne pepper in a glass of water. Endorphins are released by the brain when the cayenne hits your stomach lining.

Other useful techniques include:

  • Putting a cold compress on your forehead or behind the neck
  • Massaging the ears and ear lobes
  • Massaging the "crown" of your head -- the ring of muscles that circle the head where a crown would sit

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Headaches can be basically divided into two types, tension and migraine.

Americans spend more than $1 billion every year to get relief from migraines. The pain associated with migraines can be incredibly debilitating.  I have seen a number of patients who were seriously contemplating suicide because the pain was so bad.

Many of the drugs used to treat migraines are effective in relieving this severe pain and are a welcome relief. Unfortunately they do absolutely nothing to treat the cause and in fact actually contribute to the problem as after a short while they actually cause rebound headaches themselves.

This is very similar to drinking large amounts of coffee or soda for awhile and then trying to go off. If you go cold turkey off of caffeine you will most likely have a severe withdrawl headache. Fortunately, there are many natural treatment options that exist to treat migraines. These should always be considered first, as drugs to treat migraines can actually make the problem worse.

In addition to the massage and endorphin-release techniques linked above, I have been incredibly impressed with the
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a type of psychological acupressure, is also a remarkably effective tool to relieve the pain of migraines.

Most migraines also seem to include a food-based reaction relating to wheat, dairy, sugar, or artificial preservatives or chemicals. Eliminating these foods and incorporating the
principles of my nutrition plan frequently improves migraines.

One final, simple tip to free yourself from migraine pain -- start an
exercise program. This will help to improve your response to stress along with the underlying inflammatory conditions that can trigger migraines.

I have wayyyy too many friends who suffer from migraines.  I, or course, believe many suffer because of the foods they eat, or should I say, the foods they don't eat.  Nourishment is essential and one does not get any nourishment from fast foods or processed foods - I don't care what the "nutritional information" on the boxes say and CERTAINLY heavily pesticided foods and passed down drugs are a culprit.

The tips in this article are easy to practice and certainly make sense.  Worth a try.

I have a dear friend who's husband is a standard MD - she was on typical migraine meds - three weeks ago, finally gave up the meds and changed her diet dramatically - YEAH!!!!  Feeling better little by little - and I am certain she will continue to heal if she continues with this path of nourishing the body - not depleting and challenging it with foods that have no value.  Taste is not a viable value.

If you suffer from migraines like I started to this past year I really suggest giving the herb Feverfew a try. For me it worked miracles. Also get some Magnesium. Most of us suffer from  low levels of it and this can lead to migraines. They are both so inexpensive, under 5 dollars a bottle, that its worth a try and do some research of them on the internet.

Be sure to check to see if you react to spices before trying this method.  The following is the top 10 allergen list from Mayo clinic and most of them are in foods and foods have some of their chemical properties.  One who is allergic to balsam peru may want to stay away from spicy food.  See: http://dentalallergy.com/materialallergys.htm

  • Nickel (nickel sulfate hexahydrate). A metal frequently encountered in jewelry and clasps or buttons on clothing.
  • Gold (gold sodium thiosulfate). A precious metal often found in jewelry.
  • Balsam of Peru (myroxylon pereirae). A fragrance used in perfumes and skin lotions, derived from tree resin.
  • Thimerosal. A mercury compound used in local antiseptics and in as a preservative in some vaccines.
  • Neomycin sulfate. A topical antibiotic common in first aid creams and ointments, also found occasionally in cosmetics, deodorant, soap, and pet food
  • Fragrance mix. A group of the eight most common fragrance allergens found in foods, cosmetic products, insecticides, antiseptics, soaps, perfumes, and dental products.
  • Formaldehyde. A preservative with multiple uses. It's found in paper products, paints, medications, household cleaners, cosmetic products, and fabric finishes.
  • Cobalt chloride.
  • Bacitracin
  • Quaternium 15. A preservative.
  • However Oil of Oregano seems to help a bit if one does not respond to it allergically (Some allergys/headaches are triggered by smells and so an opposite smell may take it away).

My headaches are caused by trigger points and environmental allergies.
I suffered for a few years before I started to figure it out. Just some food for thought for those of you who might suffer from these problems also.

Try a therapist who specializes in myofascial release and trigger point therapy. If you think you might have allergies then try some of the homeopathic remedies that are available. If you find relief then you'll know what it was caused by. It's the only way to find the culprit of these nasty headaches. Its all trial and error.

    Good Luck Everyone!!!
