The Oversight of Genetically Modified Crops in America is Failing

Many scientists and health professionals, like me, strongly believe U.S. government oversight of genetically modified crops over the past two decades -- that has permitted, among other things, the creation of super weeds -- is an unmitigated disaster.

The latest problem: Bayer CropScience has asked federal regulators to approve the experimental LLRICE601, an unapproved variety of biotech rice that's been on the market for years, because it had migrated from test plots into America's long-grain rice supplies, even after the company discontinued testing the variant five years ago.

Although experts predict the long abandoned bioengineered rice will be approved, perhaps solving the financial problems American farmers may face, it may well lead to a brand new set of agricultural concerns. Specifically, the LL601 variant comes with a bacterial gene that protects rice from Bayer's Liberty weed killer. Farmers are very concerned, as new crops are cultivated, the primary ingredient in LL601 migrate once again to red rice, the leading plant pest in the South, creating more financial hardships and poorer crop yields. Two more red light concerns:

  • The petition Bayer filed for approval for LL601 that contains a great deal of information (nearly 40 percent) that has been blacked out for competitive business reasons.
  • Bayer can skip some of the regulatory hurdles for approval because LL601 is similar to two other varieties approved by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (a satellite agency that handles biotech crop approvals) but never sold because farmers didn't want them.

Unless something is done very soon, genetically modified varieties of the fruits and vegetables you eat may be the only options left, and all the health risks that may come. No better time than the present to review some simple ways you can avoid Frankenstein-like foods for good.

Failing?  It never worked.

USDA couldn't even ensure the two were stored separately the first time they tried with Starlink in the 90's.  Why would anyone think USDA/FDA  could prevent loss of control in growing situations?

The answer to this problem is simply for consumers to demand truth in labeling such that GM foods are ID'ed  as GM food on the package.  This, coupled with the growing awareness by consumers of the GMO issue, should result in diminishing demand for GM products and their withdrawl from the market-place as unprofitable.

This is the way things are supposed to work in a free-market economy.  Of course, USDA's federal charter mandates they support the ag-industry as well as   protect americans' nutritional interests.  Since this schizophrenic policy is clearly oxymoronic,  the answer is to abolish USDA's regulatory authority in toto.  They may be usefull as a research agency(although I doubt this).

This is also how things should be in a free society.

We don't need more regulations; we need vastly less.

GM was never going to work, but they tried it.  To stop this progressing we must remember that corporations listen to the health of their bank accounts.  The consumer must vote with thier feet.

Soy, potatoes, corn, and canola oil are some of the major products to be genetically modified these days. If the label does not say organic / non-GMO somewhere on it, move on to produce and oils that do. GMO’s can wreak havoc on the immune system and internal organ integrity. Monsanto’s director of corporate communications was quoted October 25, 1998 in The New York Times stating, “Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.” This blatant disregard for consumer safety and shuffling responsibility by this corporate giant is yet another reason to start educating and empowering yourself when it comes to protecting your health.

Many have stated the entire GMO movement was brought about to meet the demand for the massive, ever-growing world population. While I agree that starvation and malnutrition are very real problems, they are precipitated by unequal distribution of wealth, not by food scarcity. According to the United Nations World Food Program, there is currently more than enough food produced to feed everyone on the planet an adequate and healthy diet. The reason that approximately 800 million people go hungry each year is that they don’t have access to food by either being able to afford it or grow their own.

Biotechnology, by turning living crops into intellectual property, increases corporate control over food resources and production. Rather than alleviate world hunger, biotechnology is likely to exacerbate it by increasing everybody’s dependence on the corporate sector for seeds and the materials. "Franken-Foods" will never be as perfect for the body as real living foods from the earth as given by our Universal Source. My explosive, best-selling book Cracking the Cancer Code exposes the erroneous and perpetually publicized corporate propaganda concerning health and medicine. Oversight, what oversight.  If the government agencies where truly independent of the companies the are supposed to review then maybe we might have oversight.  Right now all we have is you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.  This is ludicrous our rice which we have genetically engineered to be resistant to are fertiziler is now out in the environment so we need it approved for human comsumption, but we have not tested it to see if humans can eat it.  But at least we can make the drugs to treat the diseases it will probably cause in the first place.
