In the original Holmes mystery, Watson finds Sherlock oblivious of astronomical acumen, to which Sherlock replies he can’t spare the displaced brain space on useless disciplines.” A more modern Sherlock might have dismissed his youthful insolence as poppycock, declaring instead that the human mind has unlimited capacity for new thought, insight, and creative ingenuity.

Richard Wagner was over 40 when he began his musical career. Many creative geniuses have to mature into the height of their abilities. I believe there is no limit to what we can achieve, and the mind becomes sharper with exercise over a lifetime of discipline. This article has lots of great tips for keeping a sharp noodle.
