Treating Emotions, Psychological Factors Eases Back Pain

Your emotions have a major impact on your physical health, and while positive emotions can help you deal with stress, negative emotions can have the opposite effect, even manifesting into intense physical pain in your body.

This may explain why a new study found that psychological interventions are extremely effective at reducing back pain (along with depression and health-related quality of life).

Researchers evaluated 22 trials of patients with low back pain that had persisted for three months or more. Psychological interventions, including biofeedback, relaxation, hypnosis and behavioral techniques were reviewed, along with 12 pain-related outcomes such as pain intensity, depression, disability and pain interference.

They found that psychological interventions were superior to standard treatments for the entire range of pain-related outcomes. What’s more, the psychological techniques had the greatest and most consistent effect on reduction in pain intensity.

Not only are psychological treatments cost-effective (treatment-related costs for back pain in the United States range from $20 billion to $80 billion a year), but they also don’t carry the potential side effects that many pain medications do. Among my favorite psychological interventions is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which borrows from the principles of acupuncture and helps you to balance your subtle energy system, resolving negative emotions and even relieving intense pain.

Over stimulation of the Sympathetic nervous system not only increases sensitivity to pain and puts the body in a state of catabolism, it also increases your risks of having the leading causes of disease in this country. Check out the physiology of the stress response:

Increased cortisol, Increased catecholamines, Increased heart rate, Increased vasoconstriction, Increased blood pressure, Increased blood glucose levels, Increased blood lipid levels, Increased blood cholesterol levels (increased LDL, decreased HDL), Increased clotting factors, Increased protein degradation of muscle and connective tissue, Insulin resistance, Increased feelings of stress, fear, anxiety, and depression, Decreased short term memory, ability to concentrate, and learn new material, Decreased serotonin levels, increased noradrenalin levels, Increased sensitivity of sensory systems, including those for pain, Decreased cellular immunity, Decreased anabolic hormones like growth hormone and testosterone … Bone loss, muscle fiber type changes

The stress response is actually an intelligent event.  It keeps you from dying from an acute stressor. But stress physiology was designed to be short term.  Prolonged emotional stress is the killer.  This may cause hypertension, pain, or high cholesterol as your body remains stuck in a state of readiness.  The cause of these disorders is not a lack of drugs in the body. To correct the cause one must correct the interpretation that our environment /world is threatening.  We can all work on attaching different meanings to the events that occur in our lives.  Nothing in life has any meaning except the meaning you give it.

Back pain as we know it, can come from many physical (disc, nerve, stenosis, spondylolythesis, atlas subluxation, etc), mental (fear), emotional (blame, shame and guilt), spiritual (fear of what is, programming from family, religion, society, etc) and visceral dysfunctions (gut inflammation, etc). The problem is that the conventional model treats back pain with one cooky cutter approach.

Most of my clients have been here there and everywhere seeing specialists all over the world, with no result. Assessing the person on all levels and then structuring their program in such a fashion that are areas are tackled has and does create healing.

You will hear from so many "holistic" practitioners that back pain is due to financial issues, a blocked second/third chakra and so on. Here is my opinion, but remember, each client is different, as well as each practitioners approach. The bottom line is that it all boils down to the same thing, love for self! You can assess this at so many levels. Most think love is I love you, sex and so on. But most do not have love for self and remember, you can't give what you don't have.

Whether it is mental, emotional, physical, etc, the bottom line is lack of self worth, programming and FEAR. Most americans focus on what they don't want, thus creating it. Start focusing on what you do want and you will see your reality change. FEAR (BL meridian) is the absence of love or self. Working on understanding self, growing self and discovering the real you, not the programmed you, will eliminate most pain.
