Warning- - GM Potatoes Linked to Cancer

Besides the obvious nutritional reasons, British environmentalists have found another good reason to avoid potatoes: Evidence that genetically modified (GM) versions have been linked to cancer in rats.

Greenpeace and Russian environmentalists had fought for years for the release of the report that showed how mice fed potatoes modified to produce the protein lectin developed tumors and serious tissue and organ damage.

The report, vindicating the work of Dr. Arpad Pusztai, has prompted some in the UK government to call for an end to new trials on GM potatoes, scheduled to begin this spring in secret locations around the country.

Halting the production of just one variety of GM crop certainly doesn't signal a trend, but it is a start in the right direction. And it doesn't mean the GM blight that taints some 70 percent of the foods you see at your corner grocery store is over by a long shot either. With the help of the U.S. court system, perhaps, Americans will have a little more time to get a little smarter about GM crops.

I'm new to this, so please forgive me if I've missed it somewhere, but how does one make certain to avoid the modified potatoes?

Admittedly, I will not be able to do without potatoes at all - I would rather give up air, perhaps it's something to do with the Irish in me: don't take away the whisky or the potatoes - so please don't bombard me with how horrid potatoes are. I'm merely asking how to avoid the genetically modified ones.

While there is a labeling system for identifying GM fruits and vegetables, I would not place a lot of confidence in the accuracy of the packaging process. It's best to purchase locally from growers you've established a relationship with, then store the produce safely until consumed.

"Those little stickers on fruit and vegetables contain different PLU codes depending on whether the fruit was conventionally grown, organically grown or genetically engineered. The PLU code for conventionally grown fruit consists of four numbers, organically grown fruit five numbers prefaced by the number 9, and GM fruit five numbers prefaced by the number 8."

If potatoes can do this to rats, what do the other  GM foods do to our bodies.  It is very frightening when you consider some of the possibilities.  You have to be responsible for your own health.

Correct, no one was ever saved by a US governmental regulator, that they could not do, and now have to do, for themselves...

Just ask the folks down south after Katarina...or several storms in Florida...neither side of the isle's in Congress (House & Senate) politicians, or their appointed divisions of bureaucrats, did anything but attempt the blame game, while Americans languished in disaster...

I just saw a piece last night on the CBS national news that the actual labor rebuilding these storm destroyed areas are hard working and honest Latino labor, documented, or undocumented, from Mexico and elsewhere...

My husband and I were fortunate to be able to move to beautiful Kauai (Hawaii) about a year ago.  We were horrified to find that there are a number of major GMO companies on this beautiful island who are doing experimental work with food crops.  Of course, these GMO corps are supposedly "HIGHLY" regulated by federal and state officials.  I'm reminded of a meat packing plant in which I worked over 25 years ago.  This plant was required to have a Federal meat inspector on-site at all times, but...his salary was paid by the meat packer, so to whom do you think he pledged his loyalty?   If the regulation of these GMO's is anything like the meat packing plant, then we have a lot to worry about.

One "error" in these open fields of crops could be detrimental to all the plant life on this island.  Why has our government allowed such a thing to happen? Obviously, the GMO corps like working in an island environment.  There is less chance of their crops being "contaminated" here, thus their scientific studies are supposedly more pure.  But the amount of pesticides and herbicides used on these crops is phenomenal.  Wasn't the purpose of some of these experiments to create crops that were less susceptible to pests & weeds?  We've had two incidents recently where elementary school children have become ill.  This school is next door to a GMO field and each event has happened the day after some substance (herbicide or pesticide?) was sprayed on the field.  The GMO Corp blames the illness on a particular weed that grows in another open field.  This weed has been there for as long as anyone can remember, but suddenly it is making our children ill?  Come on, folks.  Pull your heads out of the sand and realize that GMOs are not here for the greater good.  Boycott the GMO foods you know exist and the companies that use them.
