Why You Should NOT Use Bottled Water Whenever Possible

Drinking pure water is easily one of the best things you can do for your health, particularly when you drink it instead of sugary drinks like soda or juice. But relying on bottled water to do this is not the answer, as this excellent commentary points out.

People pay premium prices for exotic bottled water brands like Fiji and Evian in the hopes that it is more pure than water from nearby sources. However, this puts a giant strain on both the environment and your pocketbook. Consider the calculations from the article linked below:

  • A bottle that holds 1 liter of water requires 5 liters of water in its manufacturing process
  • Assuming Fiji must import plastic bottles for their water from China, this uses 2.3g of fossil fuels and 20g of water, and outputs 4.3g of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), per bottle delivered to Fiji from China.
  • The total amount of water used to produce and deliver one bottle of imported water from Fiji to the United States is 6.74kg, and the amount of GHGs released amount to 250g.

Aside from the huge environmental strain, these imported waters are expensive. It’s estimated that a $1.50 bottle of water costs just $0.22 to produce and deliver, leaving $1.28 per bottle in profits. Meanwhile, bottled water is not an assurance of purity. In fact, up to 40 percent of bottled water is bottled tap water that may or may not have received additional treatment. On top of that, it may also be contaminated with the metal antimony.

So where can you find clean, affordable, environmentally friendly water supplies? Your best bet is to filter your own water at home using a reverse osmosis filter.

With all due respect to my fellow posters, please don’t make statements like “Fiji is just tap water” without offering some proof to back it up, and telling us how you know that. Also, I’ve been drinking Aquafina exclusively for well over a year now, so it’s very disturbing to hear someone say “a friend who works for Pepsi says it’s radiated”. The Aquafina website shows their 7-step purification process, and for Step #3 it says: "a burst of high-intensity light imparts energy to the water stream to protect against naturally occurring organic substances in the water." From what I’ve been able to find through Google searches, this sounds like the Pulsed-Light sterilization system: “Pulsed light uses an intense flash of sunlight-like light to extend the shelf life of foods and kill microorganisms on food and packaging surfaces. For transparent foods, the effects penetrate as deeply as the light. Already tested by researchers on bakery foods, seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables, and many other foods, results indicate the process significantly reduces microbial loads and enhances shelf life with no change in nutritional properties”. To me, this does not sound the same as ionizing radiation (irradiation, AKA “cold pasteurization”), and it doesn’t sound like it would be harmful or dangerous, but I’m not very knowledgeable in this area; can someone who is, please comment?  I phoned the number on the Aquafina bottle (800-433-2652), and asked if Aquafina is radiated. A very courteous and helpful gentleman tried to find the answer, but after much searching, took my phone number and said he would have someone who can give me a definite answer return my call. If I do get an answer, I’ll post it here. By the way, Reverse Osmosis seems to have a lot of drawbacks, including the fact that it uses up to 5-6 gallons of water for every 1 gallon it produces.  This whole question of getting clean, healthy, SAFE water is making me crazy!

Hi Ajax,

My comment was to offer an investigation into Aquafina water.  It is more important that if I heard straight from an employee's mouth who has been working at Pepsi for several years already, that the water is "radiated" as he specifically said, that I not hold onto that data, but offer it to Dr. Mercola and others.  I did not state that I know this to be true.  I stated that I was told this and felt it should be looked into.  The additional fact that my friend was one of only 9 people that worked this shift and he was not "allowed" to take days off adds to an abusive company practice.  He had worked 30 days in a row.  This was a literal statement from him...we never see him anymore.  If he takes a day off he is written up and would be fired.  I asked him why they wouldn't just hire more people to work that shift loading the water after it has "sat for 24 hrs." after coming out from behind the walls....and then loaded onto the trucks for delivery, and he said he didn't know why.  They just refuse to hire more people.  Why are they keeping this particular shift restricted to only these 9 people.  These are just questions that should be answered.  I hadn't asked him about what they do to the water.  At that time, I never knew bottled water needed to be questioned.  He just began to tell me.  I also wonder why after working there for several years, did he not simply say that they use a high intensity light on the water.  He very specifically said, it is put into a room with 3 foot thick walls and radiated, and then it has to sit for 24hrs. before it can be drank.  He was specifically told that you would get very very sick if you drank the water after it came out of the "room" because it is so healthy that it would make you sick.....

They are just questions.

Ajax, thankyou for your comments and I echo your final statement.  I do not believe that Fiji water is (filtered tap water) and agree we should back up our statements with some kind of proof.

Responding to your questions:

I can tell you that a great start is "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To know About" by Kevin Trudeau to understand how mainstream medicine is a deception. I went through all the detoxes and cleanses with natural supplements and I stay away from ALL artificial foods and harmful chemicals. Now I eat either truly natural or organic food. I also follow a "metabolic type" diet which I don't believe was touched upon in the book but I think is crucial, I can't stress that enough. I even had my amalgam fillings removed which can contain up to 50% mercury. I also did a complete and thorough hair mineral analysis to determine what vitamins and minerals I was deficient in and then supplemented accordingly. It must be a complete and thorough mineral analysis. I re-balanced my complete endocrine system as well. I also got off all the toxic drugs I was on and there were alot which made me worse. I strongly suggest doing this under the advice of a professional health care practitioner. I did it myself cold turkey but I don't recommend it, it was a bit rough at times dealing with the withdrawal symptoms of some of the drugs, lol. I went from several active lesions in my brain and detectible myelin protein in my spinal fluid to completely healed lesions and plaques. Maybe most importantly, it's about "believing" that it can be done and understanding how mainstream medicine holds millions of people down and are forced to suffer needlessly because of corporate greed. This is what worked for me. Hope this helps. As Dr. M. says,"Take Control of Your Health".
