Will Drug Companies and the FDA Really Take Care of You?

More Americans by the day are starting to take big time notice of the scam perpetuated by the mega-drug companies that keep often toxic substances in the consumer pipeline with the help of a hands-off FDA completely uninterested in drug safety and a sleepy Congress obviously more interested in lobbying dollars than protecting your health.

That's the gist of this short trailer below for the documentary WE'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU by Lattanzio Firmian and Albertu Baudo.

The film details the many aspects of Vioxx debacle from the perspective of patients who assumed the life-threatening pain reliever was safe because a bureaucracy stacked against anything and everything but big business didn't tell them otherwise.

You'll also hear from one of my heroes, Dr. David Graham, who has argued from the start that the FDA -- the federal agency where he currently works -- has blood on their hands for allowing the Vioxx disaster to happen in the first place.

My heart sank to the floor with I viewed this vioxx video.  I have known about this devistation for a while, and felt the need to help educate others.  But , as I was watching this video, the impact was so great, I almost began to cry.  This video needs to be sent to each and every person in Washington.  Hopefully they will feel this  saddening impact.

A message to Dr. Mercola,

Please run for General surgeant for our USA.  We need a man like you in this postion.

When I started questioning conventional medicines treatment of my heart condition a few years back, I discovered some very interesting facts.  I was put on a beta-blocker in combination with a dieuretic.  I was also on several other medications at the time.  I questioned my doctor about including the dieuretic as I felt much worse after taking it.  He just told me to keep taking the drugs if I wanted to prevent further problems.  I dug deep into many different medical resources and finally found a study which said that more patients died from cardiac arrthymias and electrolyte imbalances than died from the heart attacks the drug combination was supposed to prevent. I was never given any advice on how to get off the many meds I was on or listened to when I wanted to reduce the dose,  Some of the many articles I researched here helped me get off the drugs.  It is so important to carefully withdraw from medications that can cause great harm to you.  I am so grateful for what I have learned from Dr. Mercola and from many of you.

The proplem lies at the top so may be easier to solve.  The FDA will not tell you that the regulated testing cannot assure the safety of any new drug, unless a new kind of math has been created.  Running trials on a few thoudsand people for a short period cannot generate sufficient data to be statistically significant.  you will find an excellent one-page explanation of this in the archives of The New Scientist, specifically using the Vioxx example to illustrate.  Finding a problem that may kill one person in a hundred rquires a trial consisting of approximately eighty thoudsand people.  Surely the FDA has at least one competent statistician, they are simply not telling.
In Britain I believe they've side-stepped the statistical problem by requiring each new drug to carry a warning for two years, that it is a new drug.  This then implies that by taking the drug you are volunteering for a large open-ended uncontrolled study.  Isn't this the case with Vioxx except we didn't get warned? The job of drug companies is to make money and its the job of the FDA to keep them honest, and us informed as to risk.  This is what is not getting done?  The Refs have joined the home team.
