Winter Farmers' Markets Grow in Midwest

Indoor winter markets are an increasingly useful way for farmers to sell their produce until outdoor markets reopen in the spring.

Ken Ruegsegger, who raises grass-fed beef, free-range eggs and chicken, goats, turkey and lamb, says that winter markets ''helped us survive through winter the first couple of years.''

The number of farmers markets in one Wisconsin program has grown from three in 2003 to about 50 now. They also ask participating farmers to contribute 10 percent of their market proceeds to the Harvest of Hope emergency fund, which helps farm families get through financial difficulties.

This is certainly good news, and on a side note, once i get my real license i plan to drive to buy free range meats and try to get organic local produce as well. As it is now, i try to make the best of what i can find at the local groucher.

There is a farmer about 30 miles from here who raises range chickens, turkeys, pork and beef along with a few veggies.  Although the local farmer's market is closed until April, she sends out "shopping lists" via email and then delivers to our town every Saturday.  Not quite the same as what this article is saying but it's still wonderful for me.

Need to retract my previous post, I misunderstood the point before, but I still think they could grow organic locally all year, if they can grow petunias.
