Another Toxic Contact Lens Cleaner Recalled

In another potentially nasty case of "deja vu all over again," the manufacturer of another contact lens cleaner has recalled nearly 3 million units shipped to Japan, other points in Asia and a smaller number from the United States, again due to bacterial contamination, on the heels of last spring's debacle involving Bausch & Lomb.

Although no problems have been reported stateside, California-based Advanced Medical Optics received consumer complaints from China and Japan regarding blurred vision, eye irritation and minor eye redness associated with using Complete MoisturePlus. The solution, company officials say, was contaminated by Ralstonia, a kind of bacteria not typically associated with eye infections that can still pose problems, including eye infections and microbial keratitis.

A Japanese retailer, unknowingly, identified the problem after complaining about the damage done to a number of bottles of Complete MoisturePlus. Later, company scientists discovered the damage was linked to Ralstonia bacteria that had been eating the oxygen in the bottles. No doubt, after consulting with the FDA, company officials pulled some 183,000 bottles of the tainted formula made on two production lines in China between June and October that were shipped to America as part of a special promotion.

If reading news like this makes you want to pitch your contacts and solutions out the window, I don't blame you. Just don't be tempted to make matters potentially worse by making a permanent change to your vision with LASIK surgery. Besides, LASIK is no cure for your vision problems.

I just read Dr. Mercola's alert on the lens cleanser that I use.  In fact, two night ago I rinsed my eyes out with Complete Plus; my eyes have been smarting ever since.  I do not have the funds to see a doctor, so I have to trust that my system will be able to work this out on its own.  Meditation and abstaining from refined sugars will be my contribution to the cause.

I recently got off these products. Eyes were itchy all the time and they do such a  poor job at cleaning.

Currently using new system from Ciba vision. Peroxide solution that reacts with some metallic element built into the lense case ...neautralizes the peroxide over time, ready to wear by morning. Lenses feel SO much better.

Hey, that's my brand this time. I don't wear contacts often, but thanks for the heads up. Wonder what the odds are mine is infected? My opthalmologist says I have the clearest eyes she's ever seen, and I tell her it's all the fish and fish oil I consume.

My sister and brother have both had Lasik Surgery and to this date have no complaints. I considered it because my vision is extremely bad, -5.0 in one eye and -4.75 in the other. I have been wearing glasses and contact for years. Without them I cannot see clearly past arms length. Now I am very sad because my 9 year old daughter had to get glasses a couple of months ago. After reading the information Dr. Mercola has provided I am not going to go through with the surgery. Instead I would like to try the alternative natural treatment for myself and my daughter. I am very confused though after reading the article where Dr. Mercola stated he received private mentoring in a vision restoration process  that cost thousands of dollars and is developing a course which he will be offering. Is this the Secrets of Regaining Your Vison Naturally training program or is this a different course?

And these products are supposed to be "safe".  I am glad I never got contact lenses.  I just could not get past the idea of putting a foreign object in my eye.
