The Healing Properties of Honey

Interesting that as medical technology races to find the next "cure" that may kill you anyway, a growing amount of research is taking the more natural road less traveled and finding impressive results, not unlike a bandage made from shrimp shells that promotes clotting.

Along those same lines, researchers in the UK are testing the effect of a particular kind of honey made only in New Zealand on 60 patients suffering from mouth and throat cancer to promote healing and limit their risk of contracting bacterial infections resistant to antibiotics.

This avenue certainly makes great sense, particularly in light of Australian research that, among other results, found honey hastened the healing of 15 mothers after Caesarean sections, eradicating any need to restitch their wounds.

The specific kind of honey British researchers are using, produced by bees who feed on Manuka bushes, believed to have special anti-infection and anti-inflammatory properties. Time will tell if honey produced in a far away land or in your back yard will have any real value, however.

If you're considering using honey to treat a condition, it should be raw honey, but be very, very careful about it and use it only in moderation.

Last July I wasbitten by a brown recluse while demolitioning an old building.  The bite came and went.  Then the secondary infection expoded.  I finally submitted to antibiotics and considered myself healed by about November.
Then in February 07 the infection came back in the form of a boil and quickly spread across my face as impetigo (which is so painful).  I held out as long as possible but then took another round of antibiotics.
About a week after the drugs were gone, during March, I had another round of boils and impetigo, held out as long as I could stand it, then took antibiotics. By the way, this round I was tested and resulted were positive for MRSA - CA (community aquired.)
Same thing happened in April, but I was trying everything under the sun by then and finally came upon a CURE for the impetigo...aloe vera....just cut it off the plant and smear it on.  It took the rash away in two days.  I continue to use aloe vera as a preventative and on the beginning boils, it seems to some of them from developing into full wounds.
At the same time, I began to use HONEY as a wound dressing on the boils.  It draws the infection to the surface and enables me to debide the wound and redress, quickening the painful and prolonged boil life-cycle.  It is a wonder and a blessing from Yahweh.  I have not resorted to antibiotics again...although I am still healing from the April round of infection.
I am so excited about this healing.  After drawing out the infection, it keeps the wound so clean and I can see progress every time I change the bandage.  By the way, I love the shape of Nexcare's new bandages, they seal all the way around the wound and do not let the honey get away.

For what it worth my Aunt who was severly (about 475lbs)overweight in the 70's had a C-section and the wound would not heal. After all tradition options failed he doctor went to the A&P and bought jars of honey poured it on the area and the rest is history. She of course healed.

I did appreciate your comment about raw honey at the end.  Many people are not aware that the "pure" honey found in most grocery stores in the USA is filtered and pasturized.  Which takes all the benefical nutrients out of it and basically leaves you with liquid sugar.  Raw honey is much more satisfing when used in moderation.

Bees excrete a very powerful antibiotic substance called propolis to line the entrances of their hives.  Its purpose is to combate any germs other insects might bring into their hives.  I wonder if the benefits you talk of are due to traces of propolis in the honey.  I purchased some propolis throat spray at a bee farm in Vernon BC, and I use it every time I start to get a sore throat.  It clears up right away.  In the past these usually devoloped into a cold.  I've wondered why it's not in the Mercola store.
